It's not just women who face challenges at work. Men do too. And among the greatest of these is figuring out how to communicate with female colleagues, especially those they report to.

The problem is sometimes referred to as "the double bind," a situation in which a person (usually female) receives two contradictory messages that are equally demanding and in which there is no good way to respond.

Here's how it works: A woman in a leadership position gets criticized for being too soft or too hard. She's called "shrill" or "bossy" for speaking up, yet she's told she's not assertive enough when she doesn't. She can't win, no matter what she does.

Men and women communicate in different ways, which can cause a lot of frustration. For example, men are generally more direct and to-the-point in their communication style. If a man has something important to say, he'll just say it. And when he's done talking, he expects the issue to be resolved.

Women are more indirect in their communication style. A woman may want to talk about an issue, but she may not just come right out and say it. Instead, she might bring up the topic in a general way, or try to get you to guess what's on her mind. She also tends to talk more than men do.

Men often misinterpret this behavior as "playing games" or being manipulative. They wonder why women can't just say what they mean instead of leaving the poor men guessing. However, from a woman's perspective, that's exactly what she's doing — getting you involved in the conversation so you can figure out what she needs from you. She wants to feel like partners in solving problems together, not like someone who has to tell you what to do all the time.
