Who among us has not been anxious at some point? I think all the answers will be no, but isn't everyone wanting to get rid of anxiety? Although we are also aware of the negative effects of anxiety on our health, we remain anxious! So what is the secret behind our inability to stop worrying?
The Anxiety Paradox: Do You Really Don't Want To Worry?
Research findings show that people often have positive beliefs about anxiety! Sounds confusing, right? Here's the reason for positive beliefs about anxiety:
Anxiety is a solution to the problem:
One of the misconceptions is the assumption that worrying about a problem, such as fear of upcoming quarterly exams, will help solve the problem, but what happens in reality is that anxiety causes us to tend to slip into thinking repeatedly about all the bad possibilities that may occur, instead of Focus on how to solve. Scientifically, not being anxious will allow us to think more objectively and thus help us find solutions.
Protecting our feelings:
Suppose you have already taken college exams or interviewed to apply for a job, and now you are concerned about the outcome, anxiety over the outcome will prepare yourself in advance for the worst possible scenarios, so if you really fail, you will likely feel less emotional. This practice is called "avoiding emotional disparity," meaning avoiding the great contrast between feeling happy and then suddenly feeling bad.
Now you might ask, “Well, preparing for the worst outcome is a good thing,” but what is the price?
What is the cost of anxiety?
If you surrender yourself to anxiety, you will constantly feel miserable only to constantly prepare for an event that may not happen at all, and it often will not happen. The worst is that you end up, unintentionally, turning positive feelings and happiness into a state of insecurity, and thus drowning in a spiral of Lingering misery and anxiety.
Confidence rather than anxiety
Confidence in your ability to deal with bad events, if they happen, will make you more able to deal with them. Not only that, research also shows that when you are positive and ready to deal with bad events, you are more likely to be able to devise solutions to problems.
Combined with positive thinking and confidence, exercise, meditation, and relaxation training will help you avoid anxiety.
