INTRODUCTION

Culture is the identity of a group of people living in a particular area. I am first of all an African and I am very proud of my identity as an African child, we have an identity as Africans and I will never depart from this identity. I am a Cameroonian from the northwest region, coming from the Widikum ethnic group, particularly from Batibo village. we have a good number of cultures that due to modernity, our people are gradually abandoning the culture, I will love to talk about the African traditional religion.

African Traditional Religion.

God who is the creator of heaven and Earth separated us with different, cultures and religions. They are over 10 ways to worship God on earth, and African traditional religion is the way Africans communicate with God. Before the coming of the white man to Africa, our fathers spoke incantations and pure libation to invoke the spirit of the gods( ancestors) to whom they presented the problems, so the ancestor can table it before God almighty. What many people misunderstand about the African traditional religion are the following:

ANCESTORS

The typical African man believes that when one dies he or she is gone closer to God almighty, it is practically the same case with any other religion. Catholic Christians pray to God through Mary mother of Jesus to intersite for them, the Muslim community prays to God through Mohammed, some Christians pray to God through Jesus, and if you look critically all these people are dead. A typical African man prays to God through his ancestor who happens to be either their dead mother, father, or grandparents. The white man came and introduced their own way of worshiping God and called our own traditional way of worshiping God primitive.

Our African traditional worship leaders had awsome power the commanded and could cure disease, solve the family problems presented before them, could make the dead speak and avenge the dead if they so desire. many called it black magic and started discourage our people from practicing such religion that had protected the continent for thousands of years before the coming of the white man.

The introduction of Christianity and Islamism to africans mark the biggining of religions crisis , political malpractises and Christian extortion by some men of God in Africa. I shall be give my own opinion on how we can preserve and protect our african religion.

The puring of libation and speaking of incantation is not a sin, it is just a worship process use by us Africans to communicate with our ancestor to carry of message to God. Our people have to go back to our tradition means of worship because God was never a fool to have mad us Africans with this culture. For our children to continue with such cultures, we have to do the following:

  • always take our children home for holidays , so that they may learn from the older, leaders who still live our way of life and worship.
  • Always tell our children the truth about our culture and history how we came about practicing such culture.
  • Do not allow our children copy a culture that they do not understand any thing about it
  • Teach our children the good values of our culture and worship, telling success stories of the culture we practise and how it has helped our people.
  • Basically our generation is the last with little knowledge about the culture and tradition of our people, and if we let the tradition die in our hands our ancestors will be very disappointed with us. So the best ways to protect the tradition of worship is to teach the younger people.
