Blockchain structure

A blockchain is a decentralized digital ledger that records transactions across multiple computers in a way that ensures the data is secure, transparent, and immutable. It is composed of a series of linked blocks, each containing a list of transactions.

Key Components of Blockchain Structure:

  • Blocks: Each block contains a collection of transaction data. Blocks are connected in a linear, chronological order, forming a chain.

  • Transactions: The fundamental units of blockchain, transactions record the transfer of value or information between participants. Each transaction is digitally signed by the sender's private key, ensuring authenticity and integrity.

  • Block Header: Each block has a header that includes metadata such as:

  • Previous Block Hash: A reference to the hash of the preceding block, ensuring all blocks are cryptographically linked.

  • Timestamp: The time at which the block was created.

  • Merkle Root: A hash representing all the transactions in the block, enabling efficient and secure verification.

  • Nonce: A random number used in the mining process for Proof of Work (PoW) consensus.

  • Consensus Mechanisms: Blockchain networks rely on consensus algorithms like Proof of Work (PoW) or Proof of Stake (PoS) to validate transactions and add new blocks to the chain. These mechanisms ensure that all participants agree on the state of the ledger.

  • Immutability: Once a block is added to the blockchain, altering its data is computationally infeasible due to cryptographic hashing and the interconnected nature of the blocks. This immutability ensures data integrity and security.

The blockchain structure, with its decentralized and cryptographically secured nature, enables trustless and transparent transactions, laying the foundation for various applications beyond cryptocurrencies, such as supply chain management, voting systems, and digital identity.
