Visiting Yogyakarta will not be complete without visiting the oldest market in the area, Pasar Beringharjo. This traditional market has existed and operated since 1758. As one of the oldest market in the province, Beringharjo offers one of a kind shopping experience amid shopping malls and modern stores surrounding it. If you are into market hopping, don’t miss this famous spot that’s officially located in Margo Mulyo Street.
Reaching to Pasar Beringharjo is easy. This place is accessible by public transportation such as the inner-city bus. Not to mention, this traditional market is located within the world-known street market, Malioboro.
Despite located in the famous tourist hub, this market also caters to locals. Hence, the price is reasonable than modern stores surrounding the area. If you love shopping at a bargain price, Pasar Beringharjo should be on your destination list while visiting Yogyakarta.
The market is divided into three sections. Most tourist will only visit the first floor where batiks are sold. There are small aisles selling batiks in form of fashion wear, accessories, bags and even a mat. However, if you truly want to experience shopping like locals, try to visit the second and the third floor.
On the first floor, if you go further back, you will find sellers selling dried snacks, chips and locals delicacies such as green beans pie. If you go further and leaving the main spot, you will find an area where the sell bridal clothing and wedding souvenirs.
On the second floor, there are numerous goods offered including counterfeit watches, bags and other fashion items. This spot is often untouched by the tourist and mostly locals shop here. For example, you can buy a pair of flat shoes for 35,000 IDR or equal to 3$ shoes. Shopping in this part will not leave your bank account empty. Instead, you can buy in bulks, get a discount and sell them again. Then, there is the third floor where they also sell fashion and accessories.
As someone who enjoys strolling and market hopping, Pasar Beringharjo is one of my favorite place to visit in the province. The uniqueness lies in the mixture of traditional ambient and modern flair. When it comes to price, sadly you can’t really bargain in some of the stores since it has fixed price. But don’t worry, most of the goods are beyond reasonable.
