Trastevere is a small district of Rome, located in the southwest of the city, on the same bank of the Tiber as the Vatican and which was not urbanized until the end of the republican era. The neighborhood was inhabited by the common people of the city and after the fall of the Empire the area was depopulated until the 11th century when religious complexes began to be built. Being one of the oldest neighborhoods of Rome, the streets here are small and very narrow and paved with centuries-old cubic stone. The facades of the buildings are sometimes chipped, but they keep their former charm. Everywhere, between two buildings, there are clotheslines and the clothes are lying on dry land, without caring about the surprise of the tourists who wake up here wondering where they got, if they arrived in Naples or if they are still in Rome .
And especially the streets form a real labyrinth and even with a good map in hand you get lost in the blink of an eye. But if you don't get lost, you have no chance to discover this deeply authentic and especially original district of Rome. The buildings are painted in bright colors and ivy or other hanging plants grow on the facades, and on the ground floor of the buildings there are a lot of restaurants, cafes, small shops or workshops to wonder. And if you get lost, it's not a problem, you immediately find a local who sees you looking around questioningly and who helps you get out of the harbor, he even offers to take you where you want and who on the way does not- She is silent for a second, whether or not you understand what she is telling you.
The square in front of the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere is a kind of zero point of the neighborhood, here is a wonderful fountain on the steps of which are various artists and in the square are either artisan stalls or small restaurants or cafes. Here we sat and drank a glass of orange juice which gave me a resounding surprise (actually- C. then told me that I made some sounds similar to those of Meg Ryan's character from "When Harry met Sally ”) because there was ice cream inside the glass, and I really liked the combination of orange juice with peach ice cream.
Of course, the darkness caught us still haunting the narrow streets of Trastevere and just the fact that we knew we were far from the hotel and that we would make a lot of it there, finally convinced me to go slowly home.
I luv this cityyyy so much <3
