Qualche sera fa, mentre zoomavo col telecomando mi sono imbattuto in un film che, da amante della storia, toccava un argomento che sempre mi ha interessato.
Si intitolava The German Doctor, un film del 2013 che raccontava il periodo trascorso da Josef Mengele in Argentina.
Fra romanzo e realta'.
Per chi non lo sapesse il dott.Mengele e' stato un criminale nazista che, nei lager, faceva esperimenti sui bambini e non solo, soprattutto sui gemelli, responsabile dell'atroce morte di migliaia di persone.

Siamo nel 1959 in Patagonia, Argentina, lui in fuga arriva e conosce una coppia con bambini, diventa amico della figlia piu' giovane.
La storia si dipana in modo abbastanza attinente alla realta'.
Nel 1960 il Mossad scova Adolf Eichmann, altro criminale nazista in fuga in Argentina, lo rapisce lo porta in Israele dove viene processato ed impiccato nel 1962.
A quel punto Mengele fugge in Paraguay e poi in Brasile dove morira', impunito, ufficialmente per un ictus mentre faceva il bagno in un lago nel 1979 all'eta' di 69 anni.

Il film racconta una pagina della storia del dopoguerra realmente accaduta e che parla della fuga di gerarchi nazisti in Sud America dove governi compiacenti li hanno nascosti e protetti.
Mengele era stato arrestato nel 1945 dagli americani ma era poi stato liberato perche' si riteneva fosse un graduato qualunque, non c'erano ancora state le testimonianze dei sopravvissuti ai campi di concentramento.
Era venuto in Italia, in un paese dell'Alto Adige c'era chi faceva documenti falsi, lui ne ebbe uno dove risultava cittadino italiano.
Si rifugio' in Argentina nell'entroterra dove c'erano intere colonie tedesche con scuole, chiese, ospedali dove la sola lingua usata era il tedesco.

Addirittura mantenne il suo nome in Argentina, rientro' nella Germania federale per trovare la famiglia benestante che pago' sempre i suoi spostamenti, quando il clima per gli ex nazisti peggioro' torno' in Argentina, poi Paraguay e Brasile.
Leggende narrano di paesi della pampa dove nascevano gemelli tutti biondi e con gli occhi chiari, pare lui fosse da quelle parti.
Il film racconta della fittissima rete di nazisti in tutto il mondo che aiutavano i vecchi camerati ad espatriare e a fuggire, fornivano documenti, denaro, rifugi il tutto pare senza grossi problemi.

Solo Israele e Simon Wiesenthal diedero loro la caccia, Mengele fu localizzato in Brasile, era il 1966, lo stato ebraico evito di rapirlo per non avere problemi col governo brasiliano visto che si era in piena guerra dei 6 giorni in medio oriente e gli animi erano gia' abbastanza accesi.
La sua morte e' avvolta dal mistero di certo c'e' che arrivo' a 69 anni senza troppi problemi.
Sono storie che vanno raccontate, soprattutto in questi tristi tempi dove il revisionismo regna sovrano.

THE GERMAN DOCTOR

A few nights ago, while zooming with the remote control, I came across a film that, as a history lover, touched on a subject that has always interested me.
It was called The German Doctor, a 2013 film that told the story of the time Josef Mengele spent in Argentina.
Between fiction and reality.
For those who don't know, Dr. Mengele was a Nazi criminal who, in the concentration camps, experimented on children and not only, especially on twins, responsible for the atrocious death of thousands of people.

We are in 1959 in Patagonia, Argentina, he arrives on the run and meets a couple with children, becomes friends with their youngest daughter.
The story unfolds in a way that is quite relevant to reality.
In 1960, the Mossad found Adolf Eichmann, another Nazi criminal on the run in Argentina, kidnapped him and took him to Israel where he was tried and hanged in 1962.
At that point, Mengele fled to Paraguay and then to Brazil where he died, unpunished, officially from a stroke while bathing in a lake in 1979 at the age of 69.

The film tells a page of post-war history that really happened and that speaks of the escape of Nazi leaders to South America where compliant governments hid and protected them.
Mengele had been arrested in 1945 by the Americans but was then freed because he was thought to be just another high ranking officer, there had not yet been any testimonies from the survivors of the concentration camps.
He had come to Italy, in a town in Alto Adige there were those who made false documents, he had one where he was listed as an Italian citizen.
He took refuge in Argentina in the hinterland where there were entire German colonies with schools, churches, hospitals where the only language used was German.

He even kept his name in Argentina, he returned to federal Germany to find the wealthy family who always paid for his travels, when the climate for the ex-Nazis worsened he returned to Argentina, then Paraguay and Brazil.
Legends tell of villages in the pampas where twins were born, all blond and with light eyes, it seems he was in those parts.
The film tells of the very dense network of Nazis throughout the world who helped old comrades to expatriate and escape, they provided documents, money, shelters, everything seems without major problems.

Only Israel and Simon Wiesenthal hunted them, Mengele was located in Brazil, it was 1966, the Jewish state avoided kidnapping him to avoid problems with the Brazilian government since they were in the middle of the 6-day war in the Middle East and tempers were already quite heated.
His death is shrouded in mystery, what is certain is that he reached 69 years of age without too many problems.
These are stories that need to be told, especially in these sad times where revisionism reigns supreme.
