Come ho piu' volte raccontato lo sport e' una parte fondamentale della mia vita privata e professionale.
Non parlo dello sport raccontato dal divano, una delle attivita' principali di molti italiani, ma di quello praticato a volte letto, oltre che visto nei numerosi film ben riusciti sull'argomento.
Il mio scrittore preferito e' John Grisham il Re del Legal-Thriller.
Credo di avere quasi tutti i suoi libri, magari a breve faro' un pezzo proprio su questo scrittore.
Oggi voglio parlarvi del suo libro IL PROFESSIONISTA.

Grisham adora l'Italia, lo ha dichiarato in innumerevoli interviste, ha ambientato 2 suoi romanzi da noi, in Emilia per la precisione, Il Professionista ed Il Borker.
Mentre era a Bologna, nel 2006, per trovare l'ambientazione per Il Broker viene invitato dalla squadra di football americano di Parma ad assistere ad una partita e poi a cena in pizzeria coi ragazzi.
Lo scrittore racconto' di aver riso ed essersi divertito come un matto per tutta la serata, a quel punto gli venne in mente la trama del Professionista.

Rick Dockery quarterback del Cleveland Bronws, non e' un titolare, ma durante una partita importante entra, fa disastri e la squadra perde venendo estromessa dal Superbowl.
A seguito di questo evento si ritrova senza squadra e massacrato dalla stampa, il suo agente riceve una sola proposta, quella dei Panthers Parma squadra della serie A (Italian Football League) allenata da un italo-americano, 5 mesi a 2000 euro al mese.
Cifra infinitamente inferiore al salario anche solo di una riserva delle riserve della NFL.

Pur di allontanarsi dalla stampa Usa Rick accetta e si trasferisce, lui professionista, un paese dove in quello sport non girano soldi ed il premio partita solitamente e' una pizza, da qui' il titolo americano del libro “Playng for pizza”.
Si immerge in una realta' sconosciuta, con partite viste da poche centinaia di spettatori, compagni dilettanti che, appunto, giocano e si allenano per una pizza.
I soli 3 salariati sono i 3 americani della squadra, gli altri due sono studenti che frequentano le facolta' italiane.

La squadra parte bene, poi 2 sconfitte consecutive rischiano di compromettere l'accesso ai playoff, sconfitte figlie del fatto che il protagonista si presenta sbronzo allo stadio o dopo una nottata di
sesso occasionale.
I due altri americani se ne vanno resta soltanto lui, a quel punto decide di fare sul serio e in accordo col coach studia nuovi schemi per la squadra che inizia a vincere grazie proprio al suo
quarterback professionista americano.

Trova anche una ragazza americana che studia arte a Parma.
Alla fine vincono il superbowl, il libro si chiude con Rick che segue la ragazza in Puglia in vacanza valutando se rimanere
un'altra stagione a Parma.
Valuta perche' “In Italia i campi sono piu' stretti, i giocatori piu' piccoli rispetto alla NFL ma le botte si prendono comunque e
fanno male esattamente come accade nel campionato americano”.
Se amate lo sport e Grisham e' un bel libro, non all'altezza dei suoi best sellers ma e' carino, ambientato in Italia e pieno di battute divertenti.

As I have said many times, sport is a fundamental part of my private and professional life.
I'm not talking about sport as told from the sofa, one of the main activities of many Italians, but about the sport practiced and sometimes read about, as well as seen in the numerous successful films on the subject.
My favorite writer is John Grisham the King of Legal Thriller.
I think I have almost all of his books, maybe soon I'll do a piece on this writer.
Today I want to talk to you about his book THE PROFESSIONIST.

Grisham loves Italy, he has declared it in countless interviews, he set 2 of his novels here, in Emilia to be precise, Il Professionista and Il Borker.
While he was in Bologna, in 2006, to find the setting for The Broker he was invited by the Parma American football team to watch a match and then to dinner at a pizzeria with the boys.
The writer said he laughed and had fun like crazy throughout the evening, at which point the plot of The Professional came to mind.

Rick Dockery quarterback of the Cleveland Bronws, is not a starter, but during an important game he comes in, causes disasters and the team loses and is ousted from the Superbowl.
Following this event he finds himself without a team and massacred by the press, his agent receives only one offer, that of the Parma Panthers team in Serie A (Italian Football League) coached by an Italian-American, 5 months at 2000 euros per month .
His figure is infinitely lower than the salary of even just one reserve of the NFL reserves.

In order to get away from the US press, Rick accepts and moves, as a professional, to a country where there is no money in that sport and the match prize is usually a pizza, hence the American title of the book "Playing for pizza".
He immerses himself in an unknown reality, with matches seen by a few hundred spectators, fellow amateurs who, in fact, play and train for a pizza.
The only 3 employees are the 3 Americans on the team, the other two are students who attend Italian faculties.

The team starts well, then 2 consecutive defeats risk compromising access to the playoffs, defeats resulting from the fact that the protagonist shows up drunk at the stadium or after a night of
casual sex.
The two other Americans leave and only he remains, at that point he decides to get serious and in agreement with the coach he studies new schemes for the team which begins to win thanks to his
American professional quarterback.

He also finds an American girl who studies art in Parma.
In the end they win the Super Bowl, the book ends with Rick following the girl to Puglia on holiday considering whether to stay
another season in Parma.
He evaluates why "In Italy the fields are narrower, the players smaller than in the NFL but the blows are still taken and
they hurt exactly like what happens in the American championship."
If you love sports and Grisham it's a good book, not up to the level of his best sellers but it's cute, set in Italy and full of funny jokes.
