Da buon appassionato di sport dedico il pezzo odierno ad uno dei piu' grandi pugili della storia della boxe.

Ho amato la boxe, da giovanissimo, quando esisteva la boxe, oggi con mille categorie e mille associazioni ho perso ogni interesse perquello sport.
Ricordo che da ragazzino rimasi sveglio la notte per vedere in tv la sfida fra il mio idolo Clay e Foreman a Kinshasa, sfida molto chiacchierata e dall'esito sorprendente perche' Ali', che vinse, era in fase calante mentre Foreman nel pieno della sua carriera.

Teofilo Stevenson e' stato il piu' grande pugile cubano della storia, su questo non ci sono dubbi.
Famiglia poverissima, di origine giamaicana, quattordici fratelli nato nel 1952 divenne pugile all'eta' di 11 anni.
Inizio' a liquidare gli avversari in pochi minuti, ai giochi olimpici di Monaco nel 1972 il rumeno Ion Alexe si invento' un dito rotto ed una ingessatura pur di non combattere la finale contro di lui.
Gli atleti cubani erano pero' dei dilettanti, non aderivano al professionismo.

Nel resto del mondo brillava alta la luce di Cassius Clay campione dentro e fuori dal ring, ci fu il manager di sempre Don King che si mise in mente di far disputare un incontro fra i due grandi atleti.
Fu offerta a Stevenson (e a Cuba...) una borsa di 5 milioni di dollari, la stessa che fu messa in campo per il match di Kinshasa dicui vi ho raccontato.
Stevenson rifiuto' l'offerta dicendo “Cosa sono 5 milioni di dollari di fronte all'amore ed all'affetto di 8 milioni di cubani?”
Davvero chissa' chi avrebbe vinto.

Teofilo era alto 197 cm e pesava 100 kg, atleta perfetto.
Ha disputato 275 incontri vincendone 261, su 11 incontri ai giochi olimpici ne ha vinti 9 per ko.
Storica la sua vittoria nel 1972 ai giochi di Monaco sullo statunitense Duane Bobick che sarebbe poi diventato campione del mondo dei massimi.

Ai giochi olimpiaci di Montreal nel 1976 altro oro dopo una finale col rumeno Simion che penso' soltanto a non farsi male ma che al primo colpo vero ricevuto fece lanciare l'asciugamano dal suo
angolo.
Nel 1980 oro a Mosca contro il russo Zaev.
In Unione Sovietica fu insignito del titolo di Maestro Onorario dello sport.
Nel finale di carriera, come capita a molti pugili e non solo aumento' di peso fino ad arrivare a 120 kg, da supermassimo per rientrare ai limiti della categoria si debilito' cosi' tanto da perdere col nostro Damiani nel 1982.

Nel 1984 riconquista il titolo mondiale per la terza volta, avrebbe vinto probabilmente anche nelle olimpiadi del 1984 a Los Angeles ma Cuba non partecipo', insieme al blocco Socialista per rispondere al boicottaggio di 4 anni prima degli Usa e dei suoi sodali ai giochi di Mosca.
Per questa ragione si fermo' a 3 medaglie d'oro olimpiche che vennero poi bissate dal suo allievo Felix Savon fra il 1992 ed il

Smise nel 1986.

Anni dopo aver smesso incontro' Ali' che incrocia i guantoni con lui davanti ai fotografi, ha gli occhiali scuri per nascondere lo sguardo gia' in parte assente.
Teofilo e' eretto come una quercia, come la fortezza del Morro, ha il sorriso appagato di chi non non vorrebbe aver vissuto in nessun altro modo.

Mori' nel 2012 a soli 60 anni, il cuore non resse all'eccessivo aumento di peso, se ne ando' dopo essere sopravvissuto ad alcuni infarti che sarebbero stati letali per chiunque altro.
Si dice che non disdegnasse la bottiglia ma i tramonti dei grandi campioni sono sempre velati di gran malinconia.
Quando sei stato troppo e' difficile accontentarsi di qualcosa di meno.

As a good sports fan I dedicate today's piece to one of the
greatest boxers in the history of boxing.

I loved boxing, when I was very young, when boxing existed today
with a thousand categories and a thousand associations I lost all interest in that sport.
I remember as a kid staying up at night to see in
TV the challenge between my idol Clay and Foreman in Kinshasa, very challenging
chat and with a surprising outcome because Ali, who won, was in his declining phase while Foreman was at the height of his career.

Teofilo Stevenson was the greatest Cuban boxer in history,
there is no doubt about this.
Very poor family, of Jamaican origin, fourteen brothers
born in 1952 he became a boxer at the age of 11.
He began to liquidate his opponents in a few minutes, at the Olympic Games
of Munich in 1972 the Romanian Ion Alexe suffered a broken finger
and a cast to avoid fighting the final against him.
However, the Cuban athletes were amateurs, they did not join the
professionalism.

In the rest of the world, the light of Cassius Clay, champion inside and outside the ring, shone brightly; there was his longtime manager Don King who decided to have a match between the two great athletes.
Stevenson (and Cuba...) was offered a purse of 5 million dollars, the same one that was put on the field for the match in Kinshasa that I told you about.
Stevenson rejected the offer, saying “What's $5 million
in the face of the love and affection of 8 million Cubans?”
He really knows who would have won.

first real blow received made him throw the towel from his
corner.
In 1980 gold in Moscow against the Russian Zaev.
In the Soviet Union he was awarded the title of Honorary Master
of sport.
At the end of his career, as happens to many boxers and not only he increased in weight up to 120 kg, from super heavyweight to return to the limits of the category he weakened so much that he lost to our Damiani in 1982.

In 1984 he regained the world title for the third time, he would have
probably also won in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles
but Cuba did not participate, along with the Socialist bloc to respond
to the boycott of 4 years earlier by the USA and its allies at the Moscow games.
For this reason he stopped at 3 Olympic gold medals
they were then repeated by his student Felix Savon between 1992 and

He stopped in 1986.

Years after he stopped he met Ali who crossed gloves with him in front of the photographers, wearing dark glasses to hide his already partially absent gaze.
Teofilo is erect like an oak, like the Morro fortress, he has
the satisfied smile of someone who wouldn't want to have lived anywhere
other way.

He died in 2012 at just 60 years old, his heart couldn't handle the excessive weight gain, he passed away after surviving several heart attacks that would have been lethal for anyone else.
It is said that he did not disdain the bottle but the sunsets of adults
champions are always veiled in great melancholy.
When you've been too much it's hard to settle for anything less.
