Departing from Kashgar and traveling along National Highway 314 toward Tashkurgan, you'll come across a blue lake by the roadside.
This is Baisha Lake, named for the white sand piled on the surrounding mountains. Baisha Lake is divided into the south and north shores. The south shore is closer to the highway and has a large parking lot, mostly frequented by tour groups. The north shore, however, offers more beautiful scenery and requires a detour of a few kilometers, making it more suitable for self-driving travelers.
The beauty of Baisha Lake depends on the weather. On sunny days with little to no wind, the mountains on the opposite side reflect clearly in the water. But if it's cloudy or windy, the visit might feel wasted. As this is a major stop on the way to Tashkurgan, nearly all vehicles stop to admire the view. Traffic jams are common, so patience is needed. Shortly after passing Baisha Lake, you enter the Tashkurgan region, with Muztagh Ata Peak becoming increasingly visible.
