Meditation on Power

They signed decrees, the sad pages
upon the desk of their fleeting powers.
They longed to be kings, czars, so many things,
and surrounded themselves with little crows,
chattering and reverent, those who repeat:
you are great, none equal you, none.

They divided among themselves treasures and gifts,
murmuring forged confidences,
loving no one, respecting nothing.
They delighted in the liquefied echo
of their voices commanding, decreeing.

They feasted on the smallness
of all they deemed grand,
on portraits, on the nouveau riche gleam
of bows and protocols.

Then came death
and showed them how fleeting all is
when, as humans, we are merely passing through,
a body in transit to nowhere.

They always ended weeping
over the misery of their titles,
sunk into the muddy earth.
