Nel tentativo di ridefinire le transazioni finanziarie su Bitcoin, Lightning Labs ha annunciato un piano ambizioso durante il Crypto and Digital Assets Summit di FT Live a Londra. La CEO Elizabeth Stark ha rivelato che il team di sviluppo ha iniziato a testare un nuovo protocollo su Lightning Network, consentendo l'integrazione di stablecoin e altri asset tokenizzati sulla rete Bitcoin.

Arrival of stablecoins on Bitcoin

In an effort to redefine financial transactions on Bitcoin, Lightning Labs announced an ambitious plan during FT Live's Crypto and Digital Assets Summit in London. CEO Elizabeth Stark revealed that the development team has begun testing a new protocol on the Lightning Network, enabling the integration of stablecoins and other tokenized assets on the Bitcoin network.
This movement is supported by Bitcoin's Taproot update, rolled out in late 2021, which increases the blockchain's scripting capabilities and privacy features. Additionally, the initiative leverages the alpha version of the Taproot Assets protocol, launched in October 2023, which enables the issuance of assets such as stablecoins on the Bitcoin mainnet.
Stark highlighted the growing role of stablecoins in regions with economic instability or weak fiat currencies, noting that they offer a stable store of value. Tether and Circle now hold more US Treasuries than many major nations, highlighting their growing recognition as key financial instruments.
The integration of stablecoins on the Lightning Network promises more convenient and cheaper transactions than traditional systems like Visa, with significantly lower costs, often just a cent or less. Additionally, Lightning Labs is developing infrastructure that will enable other financial institutions to issue real-world tokenized assets, such as gold and fiat-backed instruments.
This move is set to expand the use of Bitcoin not only as an investment, but also as a medium of exchange, improving its attractiveness and usefulness in the global financial landscape
