Una telecamera riconosce ciò che viene buttato, riuscendo a stimare anche il quantitativo percentuale di cibo. I dati vengono inviati in tempo reale a un algoritmo che li elabora e suggerisce come rimodulare acquisti e quantità.
Un'azienda statunitense, la Afresh si è occupata degli sprechi nei supermercati. Basandosi sui dati di vendita di prodotti freschi negli ultimi sei anni nei negozi della catena Albertson's, l'algoritmo di IA ha analizzato i flussi di acquisto dei prodotti, rimodulando gli ordini del negozio.
La Pacific Coast Food Waste Commitment, consorzio realizzato da otto catene di supermarket canadesi e statunitensi, utilizzando strumenti analoghi, ha ridotto del 25% il volume del cibo invenduto.
