L’Alchechengi, comunemente chiamato anche “lanterna cinese”, è una pianta erbacea perenne appartenente alla famiglia delle Solanaceae. Originaria dell’Europa meridionale, dell’Asia e del Caucaso, è apprezzata per il suo valore ornamentale e per i frutti commestibili.

Questa pianta si presenta con fusti eretti che possono raggiungere un’altezza di circa 40-60 cm. Le foglie, di colore verde, sono ovate o lanceolate con margini leggermente dentellati. Durante la bella stagione, l’Alchechengi produce piccoli fiori bianchi che si trasformano poi in un frutto sferico circondato da un calice a forma di lanterna, di colore verde inizialmente e successivamente arancione o rosso intenso a maturazione. È proprio questa “lanterna” colorata, simile a un delicato guscio cartaceo, a dare il nome comune alla pianta.

Dal punto di vista della coltivazione, l’Alchechengi è una pianta rustica e poco esigente, che tollera bene i climi temperati e non teme il freddo intenso. Predilige posizioni soleggiate o di mezz’ombra e terreni ben drenati, ricchi di sostanza organica. È consigliabile evitare i ristagni idrici per non favorire malattie radicali.

Il frutto, racchiuso nella tipica lanterna, è commestibile e ricco di vitamina C, sebbene abbia un sapore acidulo. In cucina può essere consumato fresco, utilizzato per guarnire dolci o dessert, o impiegato nella preparazione di marmellate e liquori aromatici. Occorre però prestare attenzione alle altre parti della pianta (foglie, fusti, calice), che risultano tossiche se ingerite.

The Alchechengi, also commonly known as the “Chinese Lantern,” is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Solanaceae family. Native to Southern Europe, Asia, and the Caucasus, it is valued for its ornamental qualities as well as for its edible fruits.

This plant features upright stems that can reach a height of about 40–60 cm. The leaves are green, ovate or lanceolate, with slightly serrated edges. During the warmer season, Alchechengi produces small white flowers that eventually develop into a spherical fruit enclosed by a lantern-shaped calyx, which is initially green and later turns a bright orange or red when ripe. It is this colorful “lantern,” reminiscent of a delicate paper shell, that gives the plant its common name.

In terms of cultivation, Alchechengi is a hardy, low-maintenance plant that tolerates temperate climates well and is unafraid of intense cold. It prefers sunny or partially shaded positions and well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It is advisable to avoid water stagnation to prevent root diseases.

The fruit, enclosed within the characteristic lantern, is edible and rich in vitamin C, though it has a slightly tart flavor. In cooking, it can be eaten fresh, used to garnish desserts, or utilized in making jams and aromatic liqueurs. However, care must be taken with the other parts of the plant (leaves, stems, calyx), which are toxic if ingested.
