🛑​Like all "physical" issues, the euro also has to deal with the problem of counterfeiting, that is, the unauthorized reproduction by third parties of coins but especially banknotes. This is also the reason why several years ago the European Commission gave the okay for the second series of EU banknotes, which are the ones most widely used by the continent's population today. Indeed, the "war" against counterfeiting also passes through the banknotes, which have increasingly refined but never perfect anti-counterfeiting systems. Euro banknotes are also shrinking in number, mainly because of the need to adapt to digital contexts, especially to cope with tax evasion and money laundering. This is why the 500-euro denomination, while remaining 100 percent valid, is no longer being printed by European nations, and the 200-euro bill will most likely have the same fate. In 2024, in fact, the Iter will begin that will lead to a new series of EU banknotes, which just as likely will be produced in a smaller number than the current figures, precisely because of a lower need for cash than in the past.
