Microsoft Bing’s Brief History: The Steep Climb to Number One
This post was sparked by conversations I had with @wakeupkitty and @golden-rain, on the topic of Microsoft's Bing's ability to create images with Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. I originally wanted to write about this Bing AI Image Creator, but my literature search on Bing AI turned my attention to the history of Bing, which is currently the 2nd most popular search engine after Google. So, this article will be a “column” briefly summarizing the history of Microsoft's Bing. And this being practically my first tech-themed post in years, I was not even sure about tag composition to use. 😀
Its history goes back more than a decade, Bing was launched on June 3, 2009 (after being introduced by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer on May 28, 2009). As part of Microsoft and being a search engine, Bing's history can be traced back to 1998 when Microsoft Corporation launched MSN Search. In 2006, MSN Search became Windows Live Search. In 2007, the search engine was renamed Live Search. Bing was launched with a vision to provide improvements to user experience and search results.
Since its launch, Bing has undergone certain evaluations and developments, especially in its efforts to compete with Google's search engine domination and gain a larger market share, including a partnership with Yahoo! Search that began in October 2010. Since then, through the 10-year partnership, the Yahoo! Search search engine has been enhanced by Bing's search algorithms.
Early evolutions of Bing included improvement on its indexing capabilities. Also in 2010, Microsoft Corporation and Facebook (which at the time was the second most visited site after Google) reached an agreement where Facebook agreed to display Bing search results to searches conducted through its social platform.
The integration of social platform data such as Facebook and Twitter (now X) that occurred in 2012 promised a new experience for users, especially in more personalized search. In 2013, Bing showed an expansion of its capabilities when it introduced the Smart Search feature through Windows 8.1. With this feature, users can search across devices and platforms (app, web, desktop) simultaneously and relatedly.
Utilizing its product lineup to try and gain bigger market share in the global search engine market, in 2015 Microsoft made Bing the default search engine for Cortana (Microsoft's virtual assistant). Cortana is tightly integrated with Microsoft services, especially Microsoft Office. Perhaps Microsoft hopes that the user base of Microsoft products, especially Microsoft Office, will have a significant influence on the popularity of Bing.
Since around 2020, the world has seen massive developments in AI technology. Bing is not left behind and utilizes AI advancements in its search works. The latest and perhaps most significant development in Bing's utilization of AI technology is its integration with ChatGPT from OpenAI happening in 2023. This integration allows for more user-interactive and conversation-based searches, akin to a searcher talking to their robot friend to perform web searching tasks. The integration with AI also provides a more personalized search experience for users, and it can reach across platforms, considering that previously in 2012 Bing had started integrating users' social media data.
So how is Bing positioned in terms of market share, after all these efforts? Let's take a look at the following table and diagram of global search engine market share in February 2023 and February 2024 published by proceedinnovative.com.
Meanwhile, gs.statcounter.com summarized global search engine market share data in the period between December 2023 and December 2024 as shown in the following table and diagrams.
From these two data, it seems that Bing's road to rival Google is still very steep, although it can be seen that Google's market share has decreased by about 1.7% between February 2023 and February 2024, and Bing has increased by 0.5%.
This ends my article on the brief history of Microsoft’s Bing. Maybe later I will write about the Bing Image Creator. I'm still very curious about that one.

Hello, aneukpineung78.
Great work, truly an encyclopedic post.
Regarding my experience, I only use Bing for generating images. I've almost stopped using Google as well. In most cases, ChatGPT replaces Google for me. It also replaces Google Translate (although Google Translate is also an AI, more specialized for translations, ChatGPT’s translations no longer feel "robotic," it's better at it).
I'm writing this to outline my point: perhaps we are already at the beginning of a shift in the role and weight of search engines. ChatGPT will continue to reduce the role of Google, Bing, and similar systems.

You use chatgpt to translate? It's the first time I hear that's possible. Who is the owner of chatgpt? It feels it's the same g-person. Did your phone came without google extras?
If it comes to certain browsers mentioned I have strong doubts they don't use google. BTW, phone brands still data as well and so does AI. I noticed that if I search for pictures it remembers my latest keys and automatically adds that info even if I don't ask for it.
You can join the "create an imagine" contest in the Italian community (see Digitaly for the keyword). I believe you are good at at. It's not easy to see something out of the box and I'm bad if it comes to searching (internet included I never see what I am looking for) and with every search I am several times blocked LOL

I agreed with her that when I put an asterisk (*) before the text, it means I need a translation, not a discussion. Very convenient.
But I keep repeating endlessly that artificial intelligence is just a tool, and the real power is still in our minds. The creativity of each person can add facets to ChatGPT; you just have to love it, not fear it.

I once used ChatGPT for translation and a moderator found my post as "suspicious of AI-generated", or something like that. Since that, I use deepL instead. It's not perfect but it helps.
Yes, we are witnessing the rising of Artificial Intelligence. Reminds me of some movies, especially the Steven Spielberg's "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" [2001] starring Haley Joel Osment, Jude Law.
The idea of AI in the film has evolved far beyond what we see today, and may very well become a reality one day. It will be interesting when robots in physical form can be realized but not when they achieve conscious existence (if it is possible) with power as depicted in other films such as The Terminator franchise.
Do you think is it possible for such think to happen? At least for AI to be able to think for itself?

I used to have that movie about the robot boy on disc back when we used DVDs—such a sad film.
But I’m really inspired by the image of the T-900 in "The Sarah Connor Chronicles": beautiful, smart, powerful, and never gets a headache!)) Basically, the ideal wife, friend, and partner. However, if they start making those even during our lifetime, she will probably cost as much as a hundred-meter yacht and will only be affordable to guys like Elon Musk, Trump, and others at that level.
I think it's possible, but not with the current technical functionality that ChatGPT "lives" on. Right now, it's only capable of reacting and isn't able to think proactively. Its progress is limited not by the ability to learn but by the need to move it to another kind of software.
For proactive thinking, the most likely solution would be a quantum computer or a hybrid system that combines neural networks with quantum and classical technologies. However, quantum computers, at the current stage of development, are quite large and complex, so they wouldn't fit in the head of a robot. Thus, the thinking of such a Terminator would still take place somewhere "in the cloud" in a powerful data center, while the head would have a powerful device for connection to the cloud.

I love AI and I would have kept that boy. The real son is a monster and I don't understand why that mother is so blind. To me it is not love but more like guilt. The only annoying part is that the robot is a copy of the developer's son. Imagine that prototype crowds the streets.
Ever watched "Real Humans"? It's Swedish (2 films) and here we humans are at the stage Robots are no longer helpers but also partners and they fight against being discriminated, robot rights and against real humans as well (imagine all your electric equipment strikes and attacks you). Good luck with the perfect wife! Spoiler: thoserobit women are smart and the men falling for them still stupid.
Great is to see how even the ones fighting those robots do give in (out of loneliness) and can't tell the difference (am talkingbabout that stuoid idiot again).
So far my #film #review - I believe I wrote about it at least two times (Netflix & Streaming)
Another minus is that the male robots are creepy while the females look great. It needs a lot of improvement just like with sexdolls.
Can robots think for themselves? Is it thinking or calculating what to say next? If you ask me it's not different from what the average human does.
We could ask @grebmot he is great in saying the right things although he keeps saying he has no clue what he's rambling about.

I didn't realize Bing was actually successful, but it makes sense. I hate Microsoft with a passion and only started using their search engine somewhat recently, because I've been farming bonus points (don't tell Bill Gates). That's about 5 to 10 dollars worth of Amazon vouchers a month. Not exactly a fortune but good enough for just searching stuff. I'm still using Google for "serious" searches, but I guess I'm using Bing as a glorified vocabulary trainer. Or to memorize all 50 American states, or something. I wouldn't call it all smoke and mirrors, but it makes you wonder about official numbers. It's like with bots on X. I remember having an account and the only people engaging me were porn bots, who kept following me periodically.
That said, I even ended up installing Edge on Linux, which is about as perverse as it sounds like. I guess their social engineering department really got their hooks into me, like with those give-aways. ChatGPT for that matter is pretty decent despite Microsoft's involvement, which brings me to AI. It's not all there yet but I'm pretty confident it will keep improving for the time being. Don't know if it will reach human cognition, or self-awareness rather, but then I don't see why it shouldn't (superficially speaking). We're kind of a biological computer ourself, even if that's an oversimplification. You know, with us putting the logical into bio and so on. I'd say argue even our emotions are really just rational mechanism with a purpose, or aren't as random as it one might think (malfunctions aside). Evolution and such. If I remember correctly some AI people might've argued that implementing emotions could proof iself necessary in order to keep pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence. Or like some degree of apparant randomness, even if I'm contradicting myself there.
Makes me also think of I have No Mouth, and I Must Scream. One of the lesser known dystopian stories about the subjugation of humanity. Makes Terminator seem upbeat and optimistic.

Don't read too much into it. Was thinking for a second you might have done a typo and you're urging me to re-read my own comment, because I unknowlingly committed perjury or some crime or such :-). Maybe, but if didn't miss anything me "farming" points is really just me building streaks with my personal Microsoft account. No sock puppets or anything, just using their bonus point system within their guidelines. Although I'm not 100% sure if Amazon won't end up locking my account, because it gets flagged due to some weird technicality regarding vouchers. But again, I assume technically I'm not doing anything stricly verboten, besides installing Edge on Linux maybe hehe.
Again though, makes you wonder how many other users might be doing the same and how credible those statistics are. Honestly, if I wasn't having a monetary incentive to use Bing I wouldn't use it at all. The search engine iself isn't that great, besides their image search. The latter seems at least above average.

The series "Real Humans" I haven't seen, but judging by what you're describing, it seems like a plot that I might enjoy—it’s exactly the kind of story I’m currently interested in.
Thank you for the recommendation, @wakeupkitty. I think that during the winter, I will watch this series, and afterward, I'll write a review (at least in a comment, but if I really like it, maybe even as a post).
I believe we are already living in a largely cyberpunk world (though not 100% yet). The question of the true nature of consciousness is very complex, especially when consciousness is not an observable external object but tries to comprehend itself from within. Perhaps, we'll find answers through further development, because as we evolve, we encounter "trigger points" for comparison: for example, a year ago, my consciousness was like This, and now it’s like That. Through the nature and quality of those changes, I have more opportunities to study the phenomenon. In this way, we might find some key in the very process of transformation.

It seems that the second version of the song "Wake up, Kitty" was liked by people more, and I even gained new subscribers. I have now completed a certain musical plan that I had outlined at the end of December, and I feel like spending more time on literature and communication this week.
How are you? Are you checking out the contest by The Gorilla, or have you also left it due to the lack of participant tagging and inconvenience?

Great to hear that the second version is an even a bigger success! Leave me a link, please. I am happy for you. It's good to hear you have a plan to work out towards to so this means you will be busy or?
BTW somewhere we left other poetry and some more replied to it with a poem.
If it comes to checking the riddles in the comment line I don't join. I scrolled and scrolled and found it hard to figure out what to look for and it didn't feel as if there was an explanation although I read how or what. I like to take my time to read, observe, think things over and puzzle about whatever the riddle is but it was some covered pictures the first one already guessed I noticed only a few days ago so I am to slow and like you I have no time or the mood to check the comment section. It's not my kind of fun and it would only cause me stress.
Thanks for the coffee kittens! I like them.
Have a good evening and lots of success with what you like to do most.

The only thing you made clear is that google rules and it is wise not to make them wiser. They started their "gemini" and I had a chat with it which was not as annoying as the one I had with the "help bot for those who want to commit suicide" or the average customer service bot. Gemini can generate pictures but I believe it comes with a prize if you like to see "humans" (it can be tricked if you change the description).
If it comes to humans there are also plenty of AI "services" provided in photos. My children showed it to me a few weeks ago. These pictures look good but a part of those tools repeat the pictures meaning there's a big chance that if you take one to show your face, someone else uses the same photo.
We are already a number, registrated (family, likes, where you live(d), phonenumber, vaccinations, bankaccount, crypto included) and google does the rest (it's wise if you need it to check the settings).
A minus is that without google you are shut out from a lot (even what the government wants you to do in this modern world like forcing you to use a certain website and browser) but checking the settings is possible and so it the option to switch off a lot of "extras" google added to the phone to keep an eye on you(r health).
It looks like you had fun with the data. Did you learn something?
