La boda desigual / The unequal wedding

Históricamente. Hasta hace poco, la única manera en que una mujer podía sobrevivir y mantenerse a sí misma era a través del matrimonio. El concepto de tener un trabajo, poseer una propiedad, tener derechos legales es un concepto muy reciente. Las damas no casadas se quedaban con sus padres y se consideraban una "carga", algunas se iban a vivir con familiares que podían permitirse el lujo de alimentarlas y sostenerlas y otras eran obligadas a recluirse en conventos. El matrimonio por amor era un tema de ficción y poesía, pero no fué una realidad hasta la revolución industrial, cuando las mujeres podían trabajar y mantenerse, y así poder finalmente ser libres para elegir a su esposo.

Sin embargo, las mujeres de clase media y alta no tenían ese derecho a casarse por amor hasta el siglo XX.

Historically. Until recently, the only way a woman could survive and support herself was through marriage. The concept of having a job, owning property, having legal rights is a very recent concept. Unmarried ladies stayed with their parents and considered themselves a "burden", some went to live with relatives who allowed the luxury of feeding and supporting them and others were forced to confine themselves in convents. Marriage for love was a subject of poetry, but it was not a reality until the industrial revolution, when women could work and support themselves, and thus finally be free to choose their husband.

However, middle and upper class women did not have that right to marry for love until the 20th century.
