During my business trip to Macedonia, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to visit the incredible nature of the country. The locals recommended that I visit Matka Canyon, located a short distance from the capital Skopje. I decided to follow their advice and I don’t regret it for a moment.
Matka Canyon is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I have ever visited. Right here, amidst majestic rocks and crystal clear waters, I felt completely disconnected from the dynamics of everyday life. There is an eco-trail in the area that allowed me to explore the nature around me in peace. The walk along the trail was like an exciting fairy tale, passing through the shadows of ancient trees to open spaces with incredible views of the canyon and the surrounding lakes.
Lake Matka, which is located in the canyon, is the oldest artificial lake in Macedonia and carries its own historical significance. The water is deep and its calm surface creates a feeling of silence and harmony. Due to the complex mountainous terrain and difficult to access places, the only way to reach some parts of the canyon is by boat, which makes the experience even more fascinating and exotic.
Particularly impressive were the numerous caves found in the surrounding rocks. They add an additional mystical touch to the area, making it even more mysterious and attractive. Among these natural wonders were several medieval monasteries, which testify to the historical significance of the region and add a spiritual element to the whole experience.
In the Matka area there was also a small souvenir shop where I could buy something as a souvenir of this amazing place, as well as a themed restaurant that served traditional dishes. It was the perfect place to enjoy a delicious meal while enjoying the view of the lake and the surrounding hills.
My visit to Matka Canyon was a true discovery, allowing me to connect with the nature of Macedonia in a way that I would hardly be able to experience in any other part of the world. This place, with its magical atmosphere and historically significant landmarks, left pleasant memories and is definitely one of the places I would recommend to anyone who has the opportunity to visit Macedonia :)
