Home Improvement Projects and Time: Nothing is Ever Just Simple!

Recently, Mrs. Denmarkguy was gifted a two person portable sauna from a doctor friend of hers who was moving out of the country and simply couldn't take this sauna with her. Knowing that Mrs. Denmarkguy has a number of aches and pains to deal with — and that heat really helps — she gave us this very nice sauna.

Although this is a free-standing (rather than built-in) unit, it turned out that it required a little more than just "plug it into the wall and go."

Now, although I am a long-time homeowner, I don't really ”do electricity.” However, I know just enough about it to be aware that the type of wall plug that was attached to the sauna meant that it draws a lot more power than your average appliance you put into a wall socket.

Fortunately, one of our friends —who could probably rewire the space shuttle — offered to come by and solve the problem for us.

Of course, it seems like there's never such a thing as a quick and easy home improvement project!

Our friend took a look at the sauna, took a look at the plug, took a look at the panel where all our electrical breakers are located, took a look at the sauna owner's manual and went to the nearby hardware store to pick up some parts.

At first we thought it was gonna be a pretty easy fix, but after poking around a bit... the easy fix soon enough turned into a two day project (he'll be back tomorrow) that involved installing a completely new circuit on our electrical panel and doing a new "home run" of heavy gauge wire to the external wall of the house where we were hoping to plug in the sauna.

Fortunately, our friend is a patient sort so he didn't really mind too much. But the whole thing was a poignant reminder of how very few things in life are ever as simple as they appear on the surface.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Denmarkguy's weary bones will have to wait another day before they can be warmed up!

Thanks for stopping by and have a great Friday!

Sort Order:

When something looks easy, it is difficult.

If something looks difficult, it is impossible.

If something looked impossible, it will turn out in retrospect that it would have been quite simple.

Only when all the possibilities for solving a problem have been played out and failed will there be a solution, simple and obvious, clearly understandable to everyone.

Enjoy the sauna when it is finished and be proud that you did it together!
