Large Goals Are Made Up of Many Small Steps!

When we decide we want to reach some major milestone — a long term goal — it's easy to become overwhelmed by just how much work needs to be done.

There's an old saying that "even the longest journey begins with a single step!"

There's wisdom there, and it's something that particularly bears remembering when we start in on those large goals we set for ourselves. If our goal is to something like renovate our house, it's to be expected that the process will take several months... or longer.

The sense of feeling overwhelmed is not unlike what we might feel when we open a box with a 2000-piece jigsaw puzzle and dump all the pieces out on the table.

I'll NEVER Be Able to Put That Together!

Of course you will!

But nobody expects you to assemble a difficult 2000-piece puzzle in a few minutes. We know this, because we are familiar with doing jigsaw puzzles. Large personal goals are little different, because we're often undertaking something for the first time.

Back in early 2020 — just about as Covid-19 was taking hold — we decided that we wanted to have a large vegetable garden, because there were many rumors about the food supply being interrupted.

But "building a garden" was a large project. It took months of clearing land, then creating a flat base, then building wooden raised beds; filling them in with good topsoil... and eventually planting and tending plants to the first harvest in the late summer of 2020.

But it got done because I appreciated the fact that I needed to break the big goal into many small pieces that each seemed "quite doable" on the day I took them on.

Those principles can be applied to most of our large goals in life... we get them done by taking small steps rather than viewing the goal as a single thing.

Thanks for reading, and have a great rest of your week!
