Reflection: Doing the "Right Thing" and Dreams of Making A Difference

in hive-185836 •  10 months ago

I honestly don't know whether it's common or not, but a lot of people I have met along the way have had some version of a dream to make the world a better place. Maybe you have, too?

But what does that really mean?

I think it's a flight of fancy that changes over time, too.

When we're young and filled with energy and enthusiasm, chances are that we're thinking about changing something on a big scale. I mean, it might even be something as significant as "finding the cure for cancer."

In time, our enthusiasm tends to become somewhat tempered by reality. Changing the world is hard work, and you discover that there are actually a lot of people who don't like the idea of their world changing... and they might actively get in your way.

It's not really malicious as much as it is plain resistance to change.

Heck, you could even consider this relatively "topical" example we're all familiar with: Why are so many people resistant to — and even trying to block — the spread of cryptocurrency?

In most cases, it's a fear of change... a fear of something not known. And I'll even admit that I had some skepticism, in the start.

So, as time passes, we often end up "scaling" our desire to change the world down to something more manageable; something more "local."

At this point in my life, I have my doubt I'm going to change the world; and I have grown relatively content with the idea that if I can make even one person's life better, then I have done a good thing.

There was a time when this sort of scaling down actually annoyed and depressed me... but why? In the long run, most of us end up primarily exerting influence on our immediate surroundings, rather than the greater world.

The thing is: Don't give up!

What often happens — and we forget — is that the "examples for comparison" that we come across are the ones reported by the media, and in order for something to be "media worthy" it usually has to be big. The person who faithfully mows his disabled neighbor's lawn summer after summer isn't as big of a story as the person whose actions touched thousands.

But are they actually any less of a hero; a worthy person; a good person? Not by my yardstick, anyway!

My point is, never give up on the idea of simply doing the right thing, even if what you're choosing to do is on a very small scale.

If you made even one person's day better today... then you've done a good thing!

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great remainder of your week!

How about you? Have you had dreams of making a difference in the world? Do you feel you have done so? Was it on a smaller or larger scale? Leave a comment if you feel so inclined — share your experiences — be part of the conversation!

There was a time in my life when yes, I was abundant with enthusiasm for changing the world with my future plans... you know, things like gracing the world with my melodious voice and influencing thought on the stage as a famous singer... haha - kidding!!!!!

Or the other moments where I wanted to right the wrongs for people by becoming an attorney. That was a legit dream actually - and I think I would have made an epic attorney... just not here in South Africa haha!

I mean the singer thing was legit too, but a somewhat less realistic one, lol.

I don't think I ever really had such sizeable ambitions as cures for diseases or whatever - but I did wish and want the world to be a better place and I would advocate for that in different ways all the time - but yes... as time has gone on and many of my efforts have dwindled and fizzled... I have absolutely become less and less enthusiastic to expend my now somewhat more limited energy and time on people and things which seldom render any real positive change.

My point is, never give up on the idea of simply doing the right thing, even if what you're choosing to do is on a very small scale.

Not in my DNA to give up on the positives of life... so yes... will forever be a glass half full girl as you know!

If you made even one person's day better today... then you've done a good thing!

I made my son's tuna mayonnaise for him earlier and his lazy heart was happy... does that count? haha!

Great food for thought as always @denmarkguy!

I think the lure of making the world a better place — in our own personal way, according to our own personal interpretation — is strong for some of us. I'm largely a hopeless idealist, with romantic leanings... always hoping for love, peace and connection.

Actually finding it is a whole different thing...

I "see" your energy... you would have been a formidable attorney!

Mostly, my ambition/dream has been to make people think. Think, as in consider their perceptions. Not looking to change anyone, just to wake them up to truly understand what they are saying, when they are saying what they are saying. It's the process of gently telling someone "That's AMAZING! Have you ever thought about what would happen if you turned it 90 degrees?" and then walking away with that seed potentially planted in their mind.

We must give of ourselves where it matters, and where it's appreciated. And that might just be a tuna sandwich, or making the cat in your lap happy.

As for that half full glass? It's refillable, @jaynie! Got wine...?

xo

Actually finding it is a whole different thing...

You can say that again, lol!

Thank you for the vote of confidence @denmarkguy and also... for "seeing me" xxx

I love this!!!! and have so much for respect for you that you can plant a seed in someone else's mind without it becoming a contest of ego. They don't walk away feelin any less of an individual or berated on any level... which makes it even more likely the seed will get sown.

or making the cat in your lap happy.

Did you keep the cat happy today? :P

Got wine...?

Always ;)

You raised a good point, sir. We all once sought to change the world, or rather, to change something that in our understanding does not work correctly. Personally, it was useful for me to change, because I understood that first of all you need to be a different person yourself, that is, to improve yourself, first of all, to become better, more professional. When I was a boss and had employees subordinate to me, I tried to be a good example for my people, and this gave excellent results. This means that in my world I have changed something for the better. I understood one thing: when we change, the world in which we live changes. It is important to know and be able to see the right aspects of your decisions and desires. I would be very glad if I could answer your question a little. Thank you so much for your post. Good luck and all the best to you.

A wise person once pointed out to me that that we "must heal OURSELVES before we can heal the WORLD."

Doing the right thing often requires deeper knowledge of ourselves... which means we have to reach a place when we are ready to look inside ourselves, rather than look outside for our sense of what to do next. It's easy to follow others blindly like sheep... not so much to strike out in our own direction because we know it's the good thing to do.
