Reflection: The Idea of "Enough" Often Depends on Our Own Perception!

in hive-185836 •  2 years ago

Perhaps you have sometimes said to yourself something like "I just don't have enough, as a result of my efforts." Or maybe you have heard a friend make such an observation... because that their job wasn't fulfilling "enough."

But what does "enough" really mean?

Without a doubt, we can pretty much all poke around in our lives and come up with something we feel is falling short of our expectations.

"I don't have enough money for Christmas presents!" or "Or I don't have enough education for my dream job!"

But are these statements really true, in an absolute sense?

Creating Our Own Obstacles

You've often read about our financial struggles on this blog... and it would be easy to say that we "don't have enough money."

But the truth is that we do have enough money, because we're still eating, and we're still living in our house. And that hints at the reality that is present in many of our lives: Life is often difficult, but perhaps we make it more difficult than it needs to be by assigning a "not enough" label to your situation.

We create our own hardship — at least in part — through our perceptions.

Now don't misunderstand, there definitely are people and situations where there genuinely "isn't enough." But they are far fewer than the frequency of people's complaints would suggest!

Re-Framing Our Thinking

Now, I can't really fault anyone's thinking. After all, we live in a world in which we are being "trained" by marketing and consumerism to be oriented towards "scarcity thinking," as a result of which we are constantly being subtly pressured into believing that what we have really isn't "enough."

If you don't have the latest and greatest this-and-that you are somehow "failing" at life. We don't think about these messages, and we may even deny that they influence us... but they are always there, and tend to creep into our headspace where they "pollute" our thinking.

I regularly find that I need to re-think what I am saying... and recognize that the actual truth is that whereas it would be nice to have a bit more, we do actually have "enough." And we are capable of finding a way, if we think creatively... and are willing to examine our perceptions!

It is the "season of giving," in many parts of the world... and in that spirit, we are focusing more on having gratitude for what is already here, rather than obsessing over what's missing.

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great week ahead!

How about YOU? If you look at your life objectively, do you have "enough?" If not, what is REALLY missing? Do you think we live in a world of scarcity, or a world of abundance? Do leave a comment — share your experiences — be part of the conversation!
