Saturday Morning Thoughts: "Public" and "Private" Sense of Self

in hive-185836 •  3 years ago

Earlier this morning, I started writing something that I intended to become a blog post.

After getting about 600 words into it, I realized that I had "wandered" all over the place with my line of thinking... and much of what I was writing was a sort of "personal opinion rant" that would make very little sense to anyone other than myself.

Interestingly enough, I write most of my blog posts in the morning, but I don't get around to finishing, editing and posting them till late at night.

This looks like it might just become one of my extremely rare morning posts!

In any case, I kept on writing my strange rant... but at the end I just saved the document to my private "journal entries" folder. Just not "right" for a blog post.

Having done that, I paused to contemplate the lines we draw between our "public" and "private" selves...

Who Are We, Really?

The easy argument would be to start talking about "transparency," but I expect there's more than that at work here.

Was I simply exercising good judgment?

Do "the rantings of a deranged lunatic" really belong in the blogosphere? That's probably a matter of opinion. There is no shortage of such content, out there...

However "transparent" we may want to be — and want the world to think we are — most people invariably have things they just want to keep to themselves... and whatever we put into the "public arena" is ultimately a reflection of how we want the world to perceive us.

It's also a product of our life experience, and even our upbringing.

In choosing to save my earlier rantings instead of blogging them, part of my choice was based on old "programming" in which I tend to avoid situations where people would likely comment "Did you even pause and THINK whether anyone on the planet would want to waste 10 minutes of their lives wading through this irrational drivel?"

A different kind of judgment.

Then again, maybe I am just "thinking too much!"

In the meantime, I hope you're having a good weekend; thanks for stopping by!

How about YOU? Are you clearly aware of a difference between your "private" and "public" self? Do you consider yourself to be a "transparent" person? Or are you more "secretive," by nature? Do leave a comment — share your experiences — be part of the conversation!
