Some days start off with a nice clear plan and then you end up sidetracking a little bit "to do a quick something else" and before you know it, almost your entire day will have gone with the sidetrack rather than the main thing you were planning to do.
I seem to have an unfortunate habit of working on either the plan B's of life or on the sidetracks that appear rather than on the main event.
I have had it pointed out to me that I'm not very good at working when there's clutter around me and I am almost compulsive about tidying up my workspace before I can do my work.
That, of course, tends to lead to my spending a lot of time on tidying up, rather than on actual working. Some people work well in a mess... I just don't happen to be one of them!
Anyway...
Earlier today I was going to just pick up some loose weeds that were on the lawn before mowing, but then I noticed that there were a lot more weeds in that bed... and I thought "why not finish one thing before taking on the next?"
Before you knew it, I spent four hours weeding rather than just five minutes picking up a few loose weeds. That's actually a fairly normal thing for me. Meanwhile, I forgot all about doing the mowing (takes about an hour) and then coming inside to do my real work...
No, it's not as if that weeding didn't need to get done — quite the contrary, we have a bit of a neighborhood Garden Tour coming up in a couple of weeks — but I had other things that were far more important that needed to get done today and they didn't get done because the weeding got done.
Some might label it as simple procrastination, but I am really not very happy with that term.
Here's the thing: I seldom "procrastinate" with just useless things like gaming, watching Tiktok reels or reading magazines or whatever... my procrastination tends to consist of substituting one thing that needs to get done for a different thing that needs to get done.
Problem is, I don't always go in strict order of importance!
More than anything, I wrestle with something that has been my "kryptonite" since childhood: a lack of discipline when it comes to following a plan.
And it's actually a bit ironic to say that, because I am good at following really long term plans. It's the short-term, day-to-day stuff that tends to get messed up.
Is it really a problem? Maybe not so much... except when this carelessness starts to cost me money. Then I get really annoyed with myself!
Next time, I will do better... (or not!)
Thanks for visiting, and have a great Friday!

In my case, I always have a secondary plan, but if I can’t fulfill the main plan I don’t get discouraged, because one has to see not only the goal but also the journey, that is, enjoy what you do throughout the day, and simply, what you can’t do is left for another day. With this I want to tell you that we have to be positive and flexible in life, having alternative plans and adapting to the circumstances, without losing sight of the objectives. When we enjoy what we do, we value the process that each activity involves. I mostly try to balance what I have to do with respect to the time I have, so that everything fits in this way.
