This Blogging Life: Of COURSE We Repeat Ourselves!

Around here, we talk a lot about "original content" and pay a lot of attention to not plagiarizing other people's work. And that's definitely a good thing.

However, if you're a long-time blogger — I've been at it since 1998 — chances are almost 100% that you have "copied yourself," at one time or another!

No, not because you deliberately chose to, but because there is no way anyone can actually remember everything they have written before!

Just in the five years I have been on Steemit, I have written over 1,600 top level posts. Do I remember what I wrote, in every single one of those? Not a chance!

The reason why we often — completely inadvertently — end up copying ourselves is that we all tend to have certain things we are interested in. Sure, there may be a million different things we can write about... but we generally don't. We focus on our primary interests.

I write about psychology, self-development, cryptos and investing, my childhood and a few other things. I don't think I have written even a single post about sports. Nor have I posted any recipes... even though I really do enjoy cooking.

My point being... we generally tend to stick to variations of what most interests us in life. And there's nothing wrong with that, either!

As so — as I write these words — it seems possible that I might previously have written a post about how we often repeat ourselves. I just don't remember, but it seems like something I might write about!

So why am I writing this post? Well, mostly to suggest to people that perhaps we can cut ourselves a little slack in our eternal efforts to come up with original content.

Please understand, my content IS original... even if I am saying something I have said before, I did not actually copy my old post, I simply wrote about the same thing — from scratch — more than once. And that's something that actually happens surprisingly often, to writers.

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great week!

How about YOU? Do you think you've ever "copied yourself," without even knowing? Do leave a comment — share your experiences — be part of the conversation!

Since I am a relatively new writer, I do not think that I am repeating myself. However, from time to time, I question myself whether I have written this before. I think the important thing is not to copy yourself but others.
