TAGETES MOLIGOLD FLOWER
The flowers are annual, sometimes reaching 0.5 m (1.6 ft) high by 0.3 m (1.0 ft) wide. In some climates it flowers from July to October. In its natural habitat in the highlands of central Mexico, blooms are produced from September to kill frost. Achenes ripen and fall off within two weeks of the onset of bloom. The head contains mostly hermaphrodite florets (having both male and female organs) and is pollinated mainly by beetles in the wild, as well as by tachinid flies and other insects. The leaves of all marigold species include oil glands. The oil stung. This plant can grow in sandy and loamy soils as long as it has good drainage. It requires growing sunshine. Cold resistant to -1 ° C; from there it is sensitive to frost and does not thrive in the shade.
CULTIVATION
This plant is appreciated for its velvety texture, blooming brightly in shades of yellow, orange and brown in summer. It is shorter, and has a more widespread habit, than its relative the African marigold (Tagetes erecta). Therefore it is more suitable as an edge crop on an open border.
This plant is used in companion planting for many vegetable crops. Its root secretions are believed to kill nematodes in the soil and are said to repel harmful insects, such as whiteflies on tomatoes.
TAGETES MOLIGOLD FLOWER PLANT FUNCTION
Medically, many cultures use infusions from dried leaves or florets. Research has also shown that T. patula essential oil has the ability to be used as a residual pesticide against bed bugs.
The essential oil is being investigated for its antifungal activity, including the treatment of candidiasis and treating fungal infections in plants.
