Timanfaya, The Harsh Beauty Of Nature
Some years ago while on the island of Lanzarote I joined a trip to Timanfaya. The trip itself was in a multiple of vehicles; a large coach, a smaller bus and a 4x4 for the more intimate parts of the trip. We even got to do some of it on foot but the terrain is so treacherous that the foot part of it is very strictly limited.
Timanfaya National Park can kill you in so many ways. You can dehydrate, if you're lucky. Otherwise you can die of heat stroke, poisonous insects, reptiles or plants. You could also fall into a pit, off a cliff or just down the side of a road and have your flesh ripped off by the razor sharp volcanic mud. You could also get hit in the face by boiling water from the volcanically heated underbelly of the hills, not to mention the that's a poisonous as it is beautiful.
Having said all that, it is a desperately beautiful place to photograph with out-worldly vistas in every direction. There are insane panoramic views to be had if you can position yourself in the correct place. It's truly one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. It's nature's harshness at its finest.
All these photos were captured from inside a moving vehicle using the very capable Sony NEX-5T and it's kit lens. I forget what the lens specs were since it met its end, along with the camera, on an African super highway while I was trying to do something similar. It dropped out of my hand and was driven over by a passenger bus. So sad.
Truly,
DT.
