Standing with a camera in front of this foggy glass and watching the end of life of all these beetles and flies, I remembered Krylov’s fables and Pushkin’s poems.

Having made several unsuccessful attempts to independently translate their texts into English, I turned to existing translations from various publications and was shocked by all the attempts at reverse translation into Russian. This is not the same at all and that’s putting it mildly. Everything there seemed completely unrecognizable to me. These are not the same words, not the same thoughts, not the same spirit that are contained in the originals. It is probably impossible to translate poems into other languages in such a way that they could make the same impression on the reader as the original. And so I decided to abandon quoting here what I was going to do as text for these photographs of mine.

But someone still remembers Krylov’s fable “The Dragonfly and the Ant” and all of Pushkin’s autumn poems. The fable, by the way, seemed completely merciless to me this time...

Постояв с фотокамерой перед этим запотевшим стеклом и наблюдая конец жизни всех этих жуков и мух, я вспоминал басни Крылова и стихи Пушкина.

Сделав несколько неудачных попыток самостоятельного перевода их текстов на английский язык, я обратился к уже существующим переводам из разных изданий и был потрясён от всех попыток обратного перевода на русский язык. Это уже совсем не то и это мягко сказано. Мне показалось совершенно неузнаваемым там всё. Это не те слова, не те мысли, не тот дух, что содержится в оригиналах. Наверное, стихи вообще невозможно перевести на иные языки так, чтобы они могли произвести на читателя такое же впечатление, какое производит оригинал. И поэтому я решил отказаться от цитирования здесь того, что собирался сделать текстом к этим моим фотографиям.

Но кто-то помнит и так Басню Крылова "Стрекоза и муравей" и все осенние стихи Пушкина. Басня, кстати, совершенно безжалостной показалась мне на этот раз...
