She is a little shy girl that usually cry when I am not around—told me one of my new students' father that time.
Just there I realized I got a real challange in being a teacher for the first time ever.
First classes were as playful as enlightening. I think when teaching kids there is nothing better that playing with them both to show your content and to learn about their language skills. I noticed most of them were great at English. Quick rising of hands and smart partipactions made me understand they were really getting me, and I was so proud of that. Alphabet, numbers, colors, food.. every topic I taught pushed me to new limits and I had to reinvent my ways constantly so my kids could learn as much as possible.
However, there were many ups and downs in between. As this post begins saying, I had girls that were not accustomed to be without their parents at all. They were like clams: closed to say a word and to listen to me. Once one of those girls told me in tears:
—Call my dad, call my dad right now! I do not want to be here.
I got close to her and I remember I asked:
—What's wrong, lady? I do not think there is something around make you cry that bad.
She inmediately replied:
—I am scared. I just want to hug my dad out of here.
As I saw her answer was so desperate, I truly tried to comfort her:
—You see, anybody is going to hurt you while I am here, ok? Besides, I reckon you have answers for each activity we have done so far, even for those ones your classmates have not. Come on, everything is going to be ok.
She looked a little surprised for my answer and stopped crying. Then, she took a sit and remained silent seeing each thing I did till the end of the class that day. I can give my word she turned into a quieter person and more secure student from that moment on.
I kept doing my best in every class during a month and a half. I consider every student got not only English contents but also my point of view on why was important they knew more than one languague nowadays for any aspect of their lives. And, being honest, I was very impressed of it because, I mean, they were only kids around 10 years old. In fact, I remember when I finished one my classes, one mother talked to me in a grateful mood:
How do you do it? My daugther is more expressive and self-confident since she takes classes with you. I used to think that it could be hard to happen someday because of her condition. Thanks!
Maybe being more surprised than her, I replied:
—She got tons of talent for English. I think it help her a lot to express their emotions. I have noticed it in class several times.
After thanking me again, she gave me a few cookies and a big smile.
Months later she and her kind daughter saw me in other side of the street and greeted me as when I taught her. Powerful memories came.
Among all the activities we carried out in class like Spell the word, Bingo, Riddles, Find the object, etc. what I enjoyed the most was parents' happy faces in the end of the course. I think everyone of them got satisfied over their children English improvement.
That was definitively a great experienced I learned much from. I have not take any similar responsability since that time, this is, a whole class, but I regularly teach in small courses I have the opportunity to be part of. Currently, I am teaching some kids in my neighborhood, including my little brother, in order they are all well prepared for their next scholar year.
I feel really bless to assume teacher role and I think, by sure, it is one of the noblest professions you can have in your life.
This was my entry for @adeljose weekly contest. This time we all have the chance to show our profession, job, etc and tell something valuable about it. If you are interested in it, just click here to know more about. Have a great weekend, Steemians!
