Adaugo and chinedu were orphans having lost their parents in a motor accident. They were still very tender then Adaugo is ten years while chinedu was thirteen. Their father, Mr nwankwo, was a popular transporter who had many buses that runs on roads. Their mother, an experienced nurse, worked with the federal medical center.while the parents were alive, life was okay with the family.
They had little worries. Their food was assumed. The family often looked forward with excitement to what Mr nwankwo would come home with whenever travelled. They were particularly interested in the things he brought from the north for whenever he travelled there,he never failed to bring home a number of live fouls, including ogazi. Usually in the evenings, the family often enjoyed nice time outside in the frontage of their house.
His family reminded those who knew them of the good old days when people enjoyed moonlight plays. Now, because of electricity, the moonlight plays in mr nwankwo's house was a daily affair.it afforded Mr nwankwo and his wife the opportunity to teach their children valuable lessons for living a good life.
So, the children thrived.yet they were not being pampered. Their father was a disciplinarian. If the children became stubborn when he travelled, the mother often put them to order by threatening to report to their father. Therefore, they took their school work serious and were liked by their teachers.
Mr nwankwo had a younger brother,Emeka, who was also married and live in ABA. Several times,Mr nwankwo had generously given large sums of money to him to increase the volume of his business. But, Emeka mismanaged the money. He his wife did petty trading. Yet they lived extravagantly. Emeka's wife proved to be vicious and envious and incited murderous jealousy in Emeka against Mr nwankwo.
One evening, after they had eaten and about to go to bed, she said to her husband:
Don't you see that your brother has stolen your star?"that was a time when mr nwankwo just bought another bus with which he would replace one of his first buses that had started to give him a lot of problems.
"What do you Mean by that?"Emeka asked her , not understanding what she having in mind.
Each time we start having difficulties,he buys a new bus.can't you see?"his wife continued.Emeka did not know what to say.He fell silent and thought about what his wife was saying. Gradually,he started seeing what looked like truth in her words. He thought about the three last times his brother bought new vehicles and they were times when they were really finding it difficult to feed.but he did not remember how they were squandering money at those times and refused to good advice because they had develop the bad habit of showing off.
And,so,Emeka started scheming of how to eliminate his brother,Mr nwankwo, so as to claim his property.mr nwankwo on his own part,as well as his wife and his family.Even though he was not happy with the way they spent the money he gave them,he made it a point of duty to ease their hardship.
Often,he would buy food items in great quantities and give to them, especially if any of his trips would take him to Lagos.Towards the end of the second term that school year, about March,Mr nwankwo and his wife had gone in their pleasure car,a Mercedes 230 Benz to attend the wedding oga friend. On their way back,a drunk driver rammed into them and they died instantly.it was a disaster.Adaugo and chinedu were still too young to know what to do.
