Colossus of Rhodes - One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
i had the chance to visit the place where it's been said
that the enormous statue named "The Colossus of Rhodes" was located
The statue was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and was about 33 meters high, almost as tall as the Statue of Liberty in New York nowadays.
Depicts the sun god in Greek Helios
and was made in honour of the god Apollo
who the Rhodians believed helped and saved the island during a persistent siege by the Macedonian general Demetrius the Siege Master that lasted over a year.
The statue collapsed after an earthquake on 226 BC but many parts of it were preserved
Today, where it is believed that the two legs of the statue stood, columns with statues of deer on top have been placed
This is what the statue looked like before its fall
photos are my property and were taken during a previous trip to Rhodes
