There are several sphinxes in St. Petersburg, there are even two brought from Egypt, whose age is more than 3000 years. But the heroes of my post are much younger - they are almost 200 years old, and they were created here in St. Petersburg on the model of a Russian sculptor. The fact is that at the beginning of the XIX century, after the deciphering of the Rosetta stone, there was a very increased interest in Egyptian culture and art in Europe and in Russia. Rich people began to build houses in the Egyptian style, decorate their interiors and gardens with "Egyptian" sculptures and so on...

For two hundred years of its existence, this pair of sphinxes often changed their "place of residence" until they decorated the descent to the water on the embankment of the Malaya Nevka River on Kamenny Island. Oddly enough, this happened in the Soviet years - in the early 1970s. However, it is here that they look very organic. Let's take a look at them!
