Munchin' Madness!

I am definitely not conservative when it comes to what I eat, though I do really try to feed myself and my family relatively healthily. Obviously there are days when you welcome a little fast food, but for the most part, I have relatively savoury tastes and even on the occasions when you do eat out, there are always healthier alternatives.

My childhood consisted of a home cooked meal made by my mom every single day and the plate always comprised of a meat, carb and veg or salad - so to my mind, pretty balanced. Over the years, I have found that my upbringing in terms of food has very much influenced my choices as an adult - thankfully so.

I love to cook and prepare a home-cooked meal for my family most nights of the week, unless we are going out somewhere and it also always consists of a pretty healthy balance.

Friends and family always laugh at me because I will often declare how I do not like pizza. It is not that I won’t eat it, or even enjoy some… but to me, I think it is “cardboard food”. As for fast food… It is genuinely my very last resort!

What freaks me out the most though is how shockingly most families eat these days. I recently got into a conversation with someone about what she and her two daughters eat for dinner on a weekly basis and well, I nearly bloody choked! If it wasn’t burgers, it was pizza, or a pre-packed mac and cheese, or spaghetti with cheese etc. Listing the days Monday through to Sunday, there was not one single mention of a vegetable or salad item. It was all meat and carbs, mostly pre-packaged meals and almost all junk food. I was gob smacked!

What kind of dietary habits can you possibly be instilling in your child if they are only eating a vegetable once every six months - I really don’t think that a two day old slice of tomato, with a ration of lettuce on a burger bun really counts. This seems to be the reality of today's family dynamic. All the meals are ready made, instant this and instant that.

If you look at the youth of today, they are becoming more and more obese at younger ages. I can understand if there is some kind of health disorder or genetic reasoning for a child of seven years old to be overweight, in most instances, this isn’t the situation. They simply have really bad eating habits. There is just no justification for a child of that age to have a belly large enough to give an adult male beer drinker some serious competition! It is really sad to see and the responsibility fully falls onto the shoulders of the parents!

When we were kids, we pretty much ate my mom and dad out of house and home, but there was not an ounce of fat to be seen on our bodies! Jude has been brought up without an option when it comes to eating healthily. He drinks water not juice and he will get salad and veg on every plate I serve for him – and it has been this way, since he was a toddler - he is fifteen in a few months and salad is something he now requests with his food and he will quite easily eat a full plate side of it, alongside his normal meal of meat, veg etc.

Obviously it took a lot of consistency and perseverance in his younger years, but I now have a child that prefers to drink water, names broccoli, cucumber and carrots as his favourite veg, will happily have a boiled egg and fresh baby spinach as a snack and will opt for a slice of cheese over a sweet on many occasion - and he does not have an ounce of fat on his body!

Something else which many seem to be so completely oblivious of, is that all this so called healthy instant food which they are purchasing from supermarkets, is not at all healthy. Mostly, they are crammed full of sugar, preservatives and a gazillion other things you probably cannot even pronounce.

I genuinely wish more parents would take heed of the habits they are forming in their children when it comes to food – When your kids are young you have the ability to guide them - be sure you make the better choices for their future!

A lot of truth... Although I don't eat insanely healthy. That's not the point, especially as the current assessment of food as healthy or unhealthy is highly variable.

I eat according to need. In other words: the body reports what it has an appetite for. In doing so, it signals a deficiency that it is currently experiencing. As a rule, this works well. Prerequisite: unencumbered eating behaviour. You eat when you are hungry, not according to the clock. You don't explicitly eat healthily, but in a balanced way. It always comes down to the famous moderation. I can't really stand ready-made food either, but I don't think an occasional burger or Coke is bad for a child. Mine didn't get these things at home back then, but at friends' houses. That was okay for me.

Yes - I couldn't agree more!!!! Even the healthy foods are unhealthy now lol - veggies and fruits covered in pesticides... meats injected with goodness knows what!

YES! This is what we should all do more of - unless of course your body has an appetite for Mc Donalds every day, lol!

Balance - that magical little word! and I agree. My mom always lived by that - nothing in excess, everything in balance and all is well with the world.

but I don't think an occasional burger or Coke is bad for a child.

Definitely not - nor for an adult either :P

You are extremely talented in your cooking, your photography, as well as your writing. It is a joy to see stuff like this.

I too had a childhood of home cooked meals and I have found that a lot of people don't really do this anymore and I find that terribly tragic. You are winning at life, that is for sure.

What a lovely compliment!!! - Thank you!!

It is tragic! Because aside from the actually "dietary" aspects - home cooking brings people together!
