A New Experience: Piloting a Big Ship in the Harbor

Hello, Steemians! I hope you’re all doing well wherever you are.

Today, I want to share something about my activities. As you might know, I work at one of the harbors in Indonesia. If you don’t know, you can check out my other post here – Me About: My Job?

I got the chance to participate in piloting a ship. What is a pilot boat? In short, it’s a small yet mighty vessel tasked with guiding large ships as they enter or leave the harbor. For me, this was both an exciting and nerve wracking experience.

Imagine this: the pilot boat is small, not much bigger than a large fishing boat, but it carries an extraordinary responsibility.

Today, we assisted an Indonesian warship in departing from the dock and helped a cement carrier ship dock safely. Sounds simple, right? Think again; the story isn’t as straightforward as it seems.

A salute to the pilot boat crew! I was amazed by how the pilot boat crew, ship crew, and harbor team worked together seamlessly to ensure everything went smoothly. For instance, when the warship had to leave the dock, we had to carefully adjust the position, provide the right push at the right spot, and make sure no part of the ship touched the dock. Everything was done with incredible precision.

When it was time to help the cement carrier dock, I was once again in awe. How could such a massive ship, loaded with hundreds of tons of cargo, be guided smoothly into a narrow dock? The answer: exceptional coordination. It made me realize that the world of harbors isn’t just about giant ships—it’s also about the incredible people working behind the scenes.

At the end of the day, I felt like I had stepped into a world rarely seen by most people. There’s beauty, challenges, and a touch of adrenaline that makes it all so exciting. I learned that the humble pilot boat might look ordinary, but its role is extraordinary—like a little hero always ready to handle big tasks.

If I ever get another chance, I wouldn’t hesitate to hop on a pilot boat again. Who knows, maybe next time I’ll guide a cruise ship full of tourists. But if that happens, please don’t ask me to carry their luggage. I’m just here to enjoy the backstage action! LOL 🤣

"Every job comes with its risks. Sometimes, what seems easy carries hidden challenges. Always value others work, for behind every task lies an unseen struggle."

I hope this story about my experience gives you insight into the life of a ship crew member. If you have stories about your work, I’d love to hear them too!
