I wonder if the existing sanctions have taken a bigger toll on Russia than we are aware of
I am sure that the sanctions are in place. Business is sensitive to any changes in the rules of the game. But in addition to sanctions, in my opinion, there is another factor - Putin's age. He understands that there is less and less time left to realize his dreams. He has repeatedly said that the greatest catastrophe of his life was the collapse of the Soviet Union. Therefore, he is doing everything to move towards the restoration of the USSR.
I fear that military intervention will be limited and response will be more sanctions.
We are well aware that in the event of war, no one will fight for us. This is quite understandable. Why should someone die for a foreign country and a foreign nation? Our task is to defend ourselves for so long that this war has become too expensive. And allies can make it even more expensive.
our media our painting a picture of everybody planning their routes to air-raid shelters.
In fact, they are not far from the truth. The war in Ukraine has been going on for 8 years, so our bomb shelters are being systematically inspected and restored throughout this period. They just showed it when they needed to :)
If it comes to it, do you think you'll need to fight? Having a war on the doorstep seems unimaginable and the reason for it incomprehensible. The Ukraine is not a threat to Russia - Even the excuse of NATO being a threat to Russia is ridiculous. Can you imagine NATO deciding "I know, let's invade Russia"?!

Everyone understands the absurdity of Russia's negotiating position. This is politics. They want to leave their traditional sphere of influence. Russia is satisfied with Ukraine as a separate state if it does not pursue an independent policy.
If it comes to war, and I don't even want to think about it, everything will be completely different than in 2014. This time our army is better prepared, we have 400,000 veterans who have the skills to fight, and society is ready to defend itself. We will not be able to stop the Russian army, but we will be able to slow it down and make its offensive very expensive. Society is set on fierce resistance, which means great losses on both sides.
There will be a lot of refugees that no one will need.
In short, a lot can be written about this, but I still hope for a political solution to this situation.

I really hope it doesn't come to war. It's beginning to look a lot like the "cold war" of East v. West now that China is having their say too.
Perhaps the attention that the US in particular has put on the situation will make it harder for Russia to do anything - perhaps it will antagonise them into doing something.
I hope for your sake that everybody shuts up and leaves you alone.

I do not want to tire you any more with conversations on this topic, but it seems that we are allies now. I wonder how your citizens feel about this? I think they are not happy :)

It's very hard to know - it's not something that is really spoken about with our Prime Minister repeatedly breaking the law and lying to people. Our media has painted Russia as "the enemy" for as long as I can remember so "your enemy's enemy is your friend" makes the Ukraine very much our friend.
