STEEM + Poloniex: Be Careful

in hive-185836 •  11 months ago

First of all, I want to note that I have been registered with the Poloniex exchange since 2017 and I have never had any problems or inconveniences when working with it. I am comfortable here, I am used to this exchange and if I had to recommend to someone whether it is worth working with it, I would say yes.

But...

There is one thing I would like to warn you about.

Previously, in order to make your deposit in STEEM on Poloniex, you needed to make a transfer to the @poloniex account and specify the corresponding MEMO. This method worked flawlessly.

However, in November 2023, Poloniex was subjected to a massive hacking attack. After that, the wallets were locked for a long time, and after unlocking, the method of making a deposit underwent changes. Now, to make a deposit to your account on the Poloniex exchange, you need to make a transfer to the @polo-wallet-01 account and specify the corresponding MEMO (which has also changed). It seems that there have been no fundamental changes, but...

If you use the @the-gorilla tool, you can see that my account is linked to two more - @mariam.dariam and @steempromoution. The account @mariam.dariam is my wife's account, who is interested in blogging, but is not too familiar with how to withdraw STEEM to local currency. Therefore, I handle financial transactions from this account. The account @steempromoution, I created for paid promotion of Steem on Instagram.

Usually, when my wife or I receive rewards for a post, I immediately convert half to SP and send the other half to the Poloniex exchange. However, something unexpected happened recently. I sent 22 STEEM, they immediately went to @polo-wallet-01 account, but were not credited to my Poloniex wallet. At the same time, I checked that the MEMO was specified correctly.

22 STEEM is a small amount of money and I didn't pay attention to it at first. But after a week, I still thought that money should not be treated like this, and wrote to support. There they replied that they had received all the necessary information and passed it on to the technical team. It's been almost a month since then, and my STEEM is still gone.

The day before yesterday I sent 81 STEEM from my wife's account and the situation happened again.

I wrote to support again, they assured me again that they got all the necessary information... but my STEEM is still not there.

It is worth noting that all other transfers that took place between these two were credited instantly.

Therefore, I assume that the STEEM deposit system on the Poloniex exchange sometimes crashes. I urge you to be careful and, if possible, use some other method.

That's sad. However, I received a tip from my friend and mentor @event-horizon, which I find extremely useful: "Always proceed with the transfer of 1 Steem before the rest of the transaction."

In your case, it may be that the rest of the transaction could be vulnerable to a system failure even after the 1st steem successful transaction. So, yes, it's frustrating and disheartening.

These are some of the flaws I think exist with exchanges dealing with cryptocurrencies, issues that people often discuss when expressing trust concerns with these systems.

The situation is unclear. Between these two failed transactions, I made about a dozen that were completed successfully within seconds. So I was sure that everything was working, and the first transaction I provided was an exception.

For now, I will use another method, at least until the issue with uncredited transactions is resolved.

When you are in club100 for so long, you sometimes forget how to transfer out. 1-steem-transfer is a good precautionary check. 😅

Precautionary check, plus assess the reliability of the system, for at least 5-10 minutes. However, you never know when something like "o1eh" mentioned can happen.

These discrepancies urghhh

You shouldn't have transferred again without resolving the issue with the first unsuccessful transaction.

Why don't you use Binance?

Binance also recently changed their MEMO, and I do agree with your strategy of using 01 Steem. It seems to be the safest option before making a big transfer.

Yes... They changed the memo and the name of the deposit address. Better to check such details before every transaction.

After a failed transaction, I made a dozen successful ones. So I thought everything would be fine :)

Oh...That's strange. I hope you hear back from Poloniex and get your money back. Even if it was a tiny amount, it shouldn't have happened.
