He's doing it!
We were looking for the start of the spring sucker spawn. It wasn't quite time yet, but some eager males were getting ready. I was the first to spot one, and even though I took three shots at it, I was unable to stick it. It seems that after taking almost a year of, I just couldn't do it. Thankfully, my oldest son was able to stick it and take care of things.
Some of these children have been working on their bowfishing skills for about as long as I have. It was a new skill I picked after moving to the Ozarks, and the Little-Peppers soon followed. Now, it’s a yearly tradition to head out during the spring sucker and carp spawning seasons and put up a years’ worth of canned fish.
The canned carp and sucker basically tastes like canned salmon or canned tuna, which makes it very easy to use in the kitchen. To be able to provide such nutritious food ourselves is a huge blessing, and it’s a financial blessing too. We would definitely rather spend the night shooting fish with arrows and then clean and can them than have me take off to work to get some money so we can push a shopping cart at the grocery store.
It’s always an adventure out at the lake in the middle of the night, and we often get to encounter other creatures besides fish, like the little turtle in this video. Enjoy the show, and stay safe out there!
