To me, it looks like you are looking up into the rafters of a small hip roof. The red torture device is a brace used to strengthen and repair the rafters.

It appears tall and narrow, like the roof of a tower or a silo. Those beams can only be 16 to 20 feet long. Size is relative I guess. :-)
