Lately, I've been drawing on toned paper sheets.

I use markers and colored pencils.
These are my recommended markers for drawing.

For the highlights, I use a white pencil.
A white marker is less forgiving and has less control over brightness values.

Here are some recommended white pencils from my drawing materials guide.

White pencils are great on black paper.
Use more white for highlights and less for shadows.

In addition, a white pencil is great with colored pencils.

In some cases, when I only need white, I do use white markers.

To sum it up, white pencils are a good addition to any artist who likes to draw.

Here is my latest drawing again.
Pay attention, drawing a black object is actually different shades (values) of gray.
