The Screen Addict Recommends โ€“ Opinions

The brouhaha around Tom McCarthyโ€™s ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ถ๐—น๐—น๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ (๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿญ) is a fantastic example of the relativeness of reviews and the subjectivity of art critics in general.

The film was met with a standing ovation after its Cannes premiere, yet reviews couldnโ€™t be more divergent.

The same goes for Paul Verhoevenโ€™s ๐—•๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜๐—ฎ (๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿญ) โ€“ Cannes was absolutely buzzing with excitement over the Dutch Maestroโ€™s new film, but critics still wildly disagree about its quality.

Thatโ€™s perfectly all right of course, but it proves to me yet again the irrelevance of criticism. When even the โ€œexpertsโ€ canโ€™t agree, an objective truth regarding the quality of art is a non-issue.

What we are left with then, are opinions. I have no problem at all with voicing strong taste or distaste for a piece of art, as long as we all agree that it is exactly that โ€“ a personal opinion.

We are entitled to our own opinions but not to our own facts. Film, like all art forms, is a product of the mind.

Make up your own.
