The brouhaha around Tom McCarthyโs ๐ฆ๐๐ถ๐น๐น๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ (๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ญ) is a fantastic example of the relativeness of reviews and the subjectivity of art critics in general.
The film was met with a standing ovation after its Cannes premiere, yet reviews couldnโt be more divergent.
The same goes for Paul Verhoevenโs ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐๐๐ฎ (๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ญ) โ Cannes was absolutely buzzing with excitement over the Dutch Maestroโs new film, but critics still wildly disagree about its quality.
Thatโs perfectly all right of course, but it proves to me yet again the irrelevance of criticism. When even the โexpertsโ canโt agree, an objective truth regarding the quality of art is a non-issue.
What we are left with then, are opinions. I have no problem at all with voicing strong taste or distaste for a piece of art, as long as we all agree that it is exactly that โ a personal opinion.
We are entitled to our own opinions but not to our own facts. Film, like all art forms, is a product of the mind.
Make up your own.
