The Screen Addict Recommends – The Creator (2023)

It fills my heart with hope to see that Disney, whose indestructible business-model is predominantly powered by sequels, franchises and cinematic universes, is still willing to roll the dice on a completely original screenplay like The Creator.

Granted – the project was produced by Arnon Milchan’s New Regency and developed at 20th Century Studios, but in the end it’s The Mouse House that is distributing.

Gareth Edwards and Chris Weitz’ fascinating and deeply moving story about our volatile relationship with Artificial Intelligence, reads like a glowing love-letter to all my favorite SciFi-flicks.

Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but I saw references to Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) and Aliens (1986), Blomkamp’s Elysium (2013) and Chappie (2015), Blade Runner 2049 (2017) and even The Golden Child (1986).

I know, I know… One could argue that all these allusions to other classics more or less negate the label “original screenplay”, but I don’t see it that way.

Paul Verhoeven once said that his work is consciously and subconsciously influenced by the films he saw growing up. This is called “Hidden Continuity”, and it creeps into the work of every great filmmaker.

This is a wonderful thing, because it keeps geeks like me busy.

In any event…

Seek it out & get your fix.
