James Gunn and DCโ€™s ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฆ๐˜‚๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐—ฆ๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—ฑ is extremely close in spirit to Marvelโ€™s ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ฟ: ๐—ฅ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ธ (๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿณ) and ๐—š๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜€ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—š๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜…๐˜† (๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฐ). Not a huge surprise of course, considering the involvement of both Gunn and Taika Waititi.

I, for one, absolutely, positively, wholeheartedly LOVED ๐—ง๐—ฆ๐—ฆ. It is such a wonderful breath of fresh air after recent disappointments in the Superhero genre โ€“ which I will not mention or write about, in accordance with my Every. Film. Counts. philosophy.

And although it was not a (theatrical) hit, Gunnโ€™s ๐—ง๐—ฆ๐—ฆ does feature many meticulously crafted characters that simply demand spinoffs โ€“ small screen or otherwise.

Case in point is John Cenaโ€™s Peacemaker, a wonderfully iconoclastic โ€œSuperheroโ€ who had his own series premiere on HBO Max.

Personally, I would also love to see Sylvester Stalloneโ€™s King Shark get his own show โ€“ the murderous jellyfish could be the antagonists! โ€“ but then again, that might prove a tad bit too expensive.

In any event, I think Gunnโ€™s ๐—ง๐—ฆ๐—ฆ is a terrific expansion of the universe initiated by David Ayer five years earlier. The numbers donโ€™t lie โ€“ Ayerโ€™s version generated roughly $600 million more in ticket sales than Gunnโ€™s vision did โ€“ but hey, so much has changed since thenโ€ฆ

Seek it out & get your fix.
