James Gunn and DCโs ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐พ๐๐ฎ๐ฑ is extremely close in spirit to Marvelโs ๐ง๐ต๐ผ๐ฟ: ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ด๐ป๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ธ (๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ณ) and ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐น๐ฎ๐ ๐ (๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฐ). Not a huge surprise of course, considering the involvement of both Gunn and Taika Waititi.
I, for one, absolutely, positively, wholeheartedly LOVED ๐ง๐ฆ๐ฆ. It is such a wonderful breath of fresh air after recent disappointments in the Superhero genre โ which I will not mention or write about, in accordance with my Every. Film. Counts. philosophy.
And although it was not a (theatrical) hit, Gunnโs ๐ง๐ฆ๐ฆ does feature many meticulously crafted characters that simply demand spinoffs โ small screen or otherwise.
Case in point is John Cenaโs Peacemaker, a wonderfully iconoclastic โSuperheroโ who had his own series premiere on HBO Max.
Personally, I would also love to see Sylvester Stalloneโs King Shark get his own show โ the murderous jellyfish could be the antagonists! โ but then again, that might prove a tad bit too expensive.
In any event, I think Gunnโs ๐ง๐ฆ๐ฆ is a terrific expansion of the universe initiated by David Ayer five years earlier. The numbers donโt lie โ Ayerโs version generated roughly $600 million more in ticket sales than Gunnโs vision did โ but hey, so much has changed since thenโฆ
Seek it out & get your fix.
