Imaginarios: "Arco de San Roque", de Marcelina Poncela Ontoria [ESP / ENG]

"Vaya... Es un lindo lugar", murmuró Margaret Krauss mientras recorría las calles del poblado de Quinto, en la provincia de Zaragoza, España, una mañana de octubre de 1905. Había llegado a la población procedente de la ciudad de Zaragoza, con solo una maleta pequeña en donde guardaba lo más indispensable. Sin embargo, solo se quedaría un par de días para descansar, pues debía llegar a Barcelona para encontrarse con su novio, un joven arqueólogo llamado Jacob Raleigh.

Sentándose en un banquillo de la plaza principal, la mujer contempló con detenimiento su paisaje. A su mente llegaron recuerdos de su niñez y adolescencia en Viena. Tres años atrás había huido de su hogar con solo una muda de ropa, dejando atrás familia, amigos y prometido. No fue fácil para ella marcharse; durante dos meses estuvo pensando en las probabilidades de sobrevivir en un mundo cruel con aquellos que no nacieron en cunas de oro, sobre todo si eran mujeres. Luego de marcharse, se enfrentó al dilema de irse de Viena o quedarse ahí, escondida en un departamento de mujeres y corriendo el riesgo de ser encontrada en medio del escándalo. Al final, y con una mezcla de ingenio y esfuerzo, ella optó por recorrer el mundo. Trabajó ahí y allá, ejerciendo de costurera y dama de compañía, reuniendo cada centavo que le daban para poder moverse hacia otros lados.

Ahora ella estaba ahí, en algún punto de España, recorriendo algunos poblados, conviviendo con la gente... Siendo ella misma.

"Well... It's a nice place", Margaret Krauss murmured as she walked through the streets of the town of Quinto, in the province of Zaragoza, Spain, one morning in October 1905. She had arrived in the town from the city of Zaragoza, with only a small suitcase in which she kept the most essential items. However, she would only stay a couple of days to rest, since she had to arrive in Barcelona to meet her boyfriend, a young archaeologist named Jacob Raleigh.

Sitting on a bench in the main square, the woman carefully contemplated its landscape. Memories of her childhood and adolescence in Vienna came to her mind. Three years ago she had fled her home with only a change of clothes, leaving behind family, friends and a fiance. It wasn't easy for her to leave; for two months she was thinking about the chances of surviving in a cruel world with those who weren't born in cradles of gold, especially if they were women. After leaving, she was faced with the dilemma of leaving Vienna or staying there, hiding in a women's apartment and risking to being found in the middle of the scandal. In the end, and with a mixture of wit and effort, she chose to travel the world. She worked here and there, working as a seamstress and a companion, collecting every penny they gave her to move elsewhere.

Now she was there, in some point of Spain, visiting some towns, living with people... Being herself.

Sobre la obra

Arco de San Roque, también conocida como Quinto de Ebro, es una obra elaborada en 1916 por la pintora naturalista española Marcelina Poncela Ontoria, una de las representantes más ilustres del paisajismo en España. Actualmente se encuentra en una colección privada.

En esta obra nos encontramos con el Arco de San Roque, ubicado en la calle del mismo nombre en Quinto de Ebro, lugar donde la artista pasaba las temporadas veraniegas con su familia y en donde actualmente se encuentran enterrados sus restos mortales. Este arco, junto con los de San Antón y San Miguel, es uno de los principales atractivos turísticos del poblado por su diseño arquitectónico.

La sobriedad del color café contrasta con la alegre combinación del azul y el naranjado del cielo, otorgándole al espectador la sensación de estar ahí, en ese poblado lleno de historia y tradiciones.

On the artwork

Arco de San Roque, also known as Quinto de Ebro, is an artwork made in 1916 by the Spanish naturalist painter Marcelina Poncela Ontoria, one of the most famous representatives of landscaping in Spain. It's currently in a private collection.

In this artwork we find the Arch of San Roque, located on the street of the same name in Quinto de Ebro, the place where the artist spent the summer seasons with her family and where her mortal remains are currently buried. This arch, together with those of San Antón and San Miguel, is one of the main touristic attractions of the town due to its architectural design.

The sobriety of the brown color contrasts with the joyful combination of blue and orange in the sky, giving the viewer the feeling of being there, in that town full of history and traditions.
