Mi querida Nannette:

¿Cómo están las cosas en París? Espero que todos se encuentren bien de salud y que Vanya se haya recuperado completamente de aquél lamentable accidente que me contaste en tu última carta.

Te escribo, mi querida amiga, porque tengo algo qué comunicarte. ¿Recuerdas a Edward, el joven inglés que vino de visita a casa de mi tía Anya? Me propuso matrimonio; yo en un principio lo rechacé, por temor a que mis padres también lo rechazaran en favor del odioso Mikhail. Ya sabes tú que aún persiste el sentimiento antibritánico tras la guerra de Crimea.

Pero su insistencia tan admirable me orilló a aceptarlo sin pensarlo más. Hoy él vendrá a hablar con mi padre, aunque convenimos en que si mi familia lo rechazaba, me fugaría con él a Londres. Ignoro si estoy cometiendo una locura o si estoy haciendo lo correcto al marcharme de Moscú con la certeza de no volver a ver a mi familia jamás, pero estoy segura de que si no tomo esta oportunidad de ir a ver el mundo, me arrepentiré profundamente.

Quizás te vea en París pronto, amiga mía, porque para allá iremos Edward y yo. Por mientras, espero que disfrutes este hermoso cuadro pintado por una encantadora artista llamada María Bashkirteva. Espero que sea de tu agrado.

How are things in Paris? I hope that everyone is in good health and that Vanya has fully recovered from that unfortunate accident that you told me about in your last letter.

I write you, my dear friend, because I have something to tell you: Do you remember Edward, the young Englishman who came to visit my Aunt Anya's house? He proposed to me; I initially turned him down, fearing that my parents would also turn him down in favor of the hateful Mikhail. You know how anti-British sentiment still lingers after the Crimean War.

But his admirable insistence led me to accept it without further thought. Today he'll come to talk to my father, although we agreed that if my family rejected him, I would elope with him to London. I don't know if I'm doing something crazy or if I'm doing the right thing by leaving Moscow with the certainty of never seeing my family again, but I'm sure that if I don't take this opportunity to go see the world, I will deeply regret it.

Maybe I'll see you in Paris soon, my friend, because that's where Edward and I are going. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this beautiful painting by a lovely artist named Maria Bashkirteva. I hope it is to your liking.

Sobre la obra

El paraguas es una obra pictórica elaborada en 1883 por la escritora, escultora y pintora franco-rusa María Bashkirtseff (también Bashkirteva), artista reconocida por sus retratos de la vida cotidiana de las distintas clases sociales, enfocándose mayormente en los niños y las mujeres. Actualmente la obra se encuentra expuesta en el Museo Estatal Ruso en San Petersburgo, Rusia.

Un aspecto a destacar de esta obra es el año de su elaboración. Bashkirteff fallecería en 1884, poco antes de cumplir los 26 años, a causa de la tuberculosis que le diagnosticaron años atrás. Quizás esta obra en particular, además de reflejar un aspecto de la vida cotidiana (la visita a un cementerio, quizás), podría ser el retrato de la actitud que tenía la pintora frente a la muerte inminente: la serenidad ante todo en un mundo lleno de luces (fondo gris) y sombras (el paraguas).

On the artwork

The Umbrella is an artwork made in 1883 by the Franco-Russian writer, sculptor and painter Maria Bashkirteff (also Bashkirteva), a known artist by her portraits of the daily life of the different social classes, mainly focusing in children and women. The artwork is currently exhibited in the State Russian Museum, in St. Petersburg, Russia.

An aspect to highlight about this work is the year it was made. Bashkirteff would die in 1884, shortly before his 26th birthday, due to tuberculosis that was diagnosed with years before. Perhaps this particular work, in addition to reflecting an aspect of everyday life (perhaps visiting a cemetery), could be a portrait of the painter's attitude towards imminent death: serenity above all else in a world full of of lights (gray background) and shadows (the umbrella).
