Alejandra Bustamante Bart contempló con nostalgia las costas de Durand Eastman Beach, ubicada en el estado de Nueva York, una mañana de 1907. El sonido de las olas y la sensación de la arena en sus pies le recordaron a su tierna infancia en las playas de Progreso, México; su madre, una bella mujer norteamericana llamada Lily Bart, solía llevarla a pasear a la playa todos los días con tal de ver juntas el amanecer. Su padre, Alfredo Bustamante, siempre estaba ocupado trabajando en Mérida, capital del estado de Yucatán.
Era una infancia tranquila, quizás con alguna que otra privación dado que su padre no provenía de una familia rica como su madre, quien había caído en desgracia ante la alta sociedad neoyorkina debido a indiscreciones de juventud. Una infancia en la que su madre le procuró no solo una buena educación, sino también un sentido de ser ella misma en mente, alma y corazón. Sé independiente y leal a ti misma; aprende cualquier oficio que te permita vivir con dignidad y administra bien los recursos que tengas en manos, porque éstos no son eternos, le dijo su madre una vez cuando alcanzó los quince años de edad. Un consejo, quizás el mejor de todos los que ha recibido de su madre, que ella aún llevaba impreso en el alma a sus 30 años.
Alejandra Bustamante Bart looked longingly at the shores of Durand Eastman Beach, located in upstate New York, one morning in 1907. The sound of the waves and the feel of the sand on her feet reminded her of her early childhood on the beaches of Progreso, Mexico; her mother, a beautiful American woman named Lily Bart, used to take her for walks to the beach every day so they could watch the sunrise together. Her father, Alfredo Bustamante, was always busy working in Merida, the capital of the state of Yucatán.
It was a quiet childhood, perhaps with some deprivation since his father did not come from a wealthy family like his mother, who had fallen out of favor with New York high society due to youthful indiscretions. A childhood in which her mother provided her with not only a good education, but also a sense of being herself in mind, soul and heart. Be independent and true to yourself; learn any trade that allows you to live with dignity and manage well the resources you have in your hands, because they are not eternal, her mother told her once when she reached fifteen years of age. A piece of advice, perhaps the best of all that she has received from her mother, which she still had imprinted on her soul at her 30's.
Sobre la obra
La Playa de Dinard es una obra pictórica elaborada en 1907 por el pintor, grabador, dibujante e ilustrador francocanadiense Clarence Gagnon, una conocida figura del Impresionismo canadiense famoso por sus paisajes rurales. Actualmente se encuentra en una colección privada. Como dato curioso, esta pintura es la primera de una duología del mismo nombre.
En esta pintura observamos la vida cotidiana que transcurría en las playas de Dinard, Francia. En primera fila vemos a tres personajes; el del centro, una mujer, parece dirigir su mirada hacia la niña de rojo, dándole la espalda a otro infante. En el fondo del lado derecho, aunque apenas visible, podemos ver a un bañista, quizás alejándose del bote; a poca distancia del bañista observamos una quinta figura, presumiblemente un infante, recolectando conchas. Muy al fondo, detrás del bote, se puede contemplar lo que parece una zona montañosa, presumiblemente las costas británicas.
On the artwork
The Beach at Dinard was an artwork made in 1907 by the French Canadian painter, engraver, illustrator and draughtsman Clarence Gagnon, a well known figure of the Canadian Impressionism famouse for his rural landscapes. It is currently in a private collection. As a curious fact, this painting is the first of a duology of the same name.
In this painting we observe the daily life that took place on the beaches of Dinard, France. In the first row we see three characters; the one in the center, a woman, seems to direct her gaze towards the girl in red, turning her back on another child. In the background on the right side, although barely visible, we can see a bather, perhaps walking away from the boat; A short distance from the bather we observe a fifth figure, presumably an infant, collecting shells. Far in the background, behind the boat, you can see what looks like a mountainous area, presumably the British coast.
