"Io, Saturnalia!", happily exclaimed Titus Aurelius as he proudly raised his goblet of wine. His guests responded to his cheering with equal enthusiasm. Everyone, except Ana Mania, who was thoughtful while she was reclining with her master, in the very center of the celebration. The Saturnalia just started; in the streets of Rome a festive air was breathed, with the houses decorated and entire families offering the generous Saturn his harvests.
Slave of the Aurelius, Ana had been in that household for 2 years, sold by her own father to pay off the gambling debts he had acquired. Her family never had slaves, but she knew from gossip in the neighborhood where she lived that slaves didn't have a dignified life. Therefore, she begged and begged her father not to sell her, that they would think of something for her to pay off his high gambling debts, but her father refused to listen to her. However, she had to admit that she had no reason to complain about; being a skilled seamstress and competent clerk, she earned her own money, a privilege very few slaves enjoyed her; with it she intended to buy her freedom in a year or two, depending on how things developed.
On the artwork
The Romans in their decadence (in French, Les Romains de la décadence) is a painting elaborated between 1844 and 1847 by the French painter and teacher Thomas Couture, known for his religious and historical works framed within French academicism and for being the mentor of several impressionist painters, such as Édouard Manet and Henri Fantin-Latour. This work measures eight meters high by five meters high. It was exhibited for the first time at the 1847 Paris Salon, an annual event organized by the Paris Academy of Fine Arts. The artwork is currently on display at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, France.
The artwork introduces us a bacchanalia; on the right side, wearing only a loincloth, a man raises his glass, perhaps directing his gaze towards one of the statues, presumably of Julius Caesar or Augustus Caesar, the first emperors. Going a little further on the same side, we see two individuals who look disapprovingly at the behavior of the first; to one side of them, perched on one of the statues, is an individual offering to said figure.
Interesting is the empty and indifferent gaze of the lady in white lying in the center, perhaps the symbol of purity resigned to an imminent disaster resulting from that unbridled celebration. We noticed a similar gesture in the woman on her left side, who looked directly at her. On that same side, in the background, we see another woman with an attitude of shame.
In a certain way, this painting reflects the author's critique of the different moral aspects of the society of his time, using History as a mirror of what happened during the decadent years of Rome.
