Deutsch im Anschluß...

Either I have it particularly easy in this round of the competition - or particularly difficult: I have known the initial picture for a long time. You could say it spoke to me immediately - it prompted me to write the text that you were also presented with. In this respect, of course, I also have a special relationship to the words...

At that time, of course, no description of the picture came to my mind, but many little thoughts that were triggered by the photo. So I will use this competition to make clear what was going through my mind when I wrote the text. I already suspect that it might require a lot of words ;-)) I will therefore limit myself to exactly one final image; I will explain how I got there and which tools I tried until I was satisfied...

First of all, you should know that I freeze very easily and therefore very often ;-)) Because it doesn't necessarily have to be objectively cold, I like to use the phrase of my "inner coldness", by means of which I try to express how and why I feel that way...

@ty-ty's picture now shows us a clearly frosty cold situation. I see the snow, which makes the otherwise perhaps inviting benches seem rather distracting. Behind them is a bare sandstone wall, which in summer may give a warm feeling due to its earthy hue - but in winter also seems cold and sober. The suggestive silhouette of a city skyline, left by the blowing snow on the stones, additionally means something cold and unpleasant for me: you already know from previous posts that I don't feel comfortable in urban surroundings and perceive them as unnatural and grotesque...

So there we have two levels of coldness - the obvious one captured in the picture and the one I feel.

Now it is the case that I myself also usually appear cold and distant. Those who don't know me therefore like to accuse me of arrogance or pretentiousness, aloofness or insensitivity. Well, up to a certain point this is even intentional or even undeniable. I don't really care what other people think of me. If someone or something doesn't interest me, I will say so rather than pretend or feign likeability. And I don't do well with closeness - people who press me (and this can be done quite respectfully and at a comfortable spacing for themselves) I successfully keep my distance. I don't mean that in a bad way. I just want to be left alone...

In fact, however, despite all the external and sometimes existing harshness / coldness, I am quite emotional. So to speak, the literal soft core within the hard shell or the blazing fire under the frosty facade... To make a counterpart understand this (if you are also a bit out of practice) can be a demanding task ;-))

Last but not least, frozen water, ice is something fragile, translucent. You know what it's like: Careful, thin ice! Nevertheless, it has an enormous power that can easily break through glass and stone.

With this I have named the third and fourth level of my cold associations: the fire under the ice and the destructive power of the supposedly brittle, fragile element.

So all this is now to be included in the picture. So - for me it is already contained in it ;-)) But how do I show it to YOU?

Up to now, I have understood image editing as a minimally invasive intervention with which certain improvements or accentuations are achieved. There may also be a playful element. Life is serious enough ;-)) Today, however, I had to change a photo radically. This was my first attempt in this form. Accordingly, I was unsure about the use of the methods...

In the past rounds I was able to spy which tools the participants used. I know and use GIMP myself, but found it unsuitable for my purposes in this case. Online, I found a number of free offers that, on closer inspection, serve more to create funny memes or silly comic-like trash pictures. I liked experte.de - until I found out that you have to be an expert to understand the handling... Nothing for me ;-)) At fotor.de one has to register, adobe.com is only free in the very basic functions. So I got stuck with pixlr.com and fotojet.com. With a combination of both offers I started to tinker... To come to the conclusion that for the last "broken glass effect" a third one is needed, namely photofunia.com.

Here I worked on GIMP on the contrasts, sharpening and colour tone to make a later underlaid photo more visible.

This was placed under the original photo on pixlr.com, which was given a transparency of 40% for the purpose.

Here I chose any picture details and put it over the already prefabricated double package using fotojet.com.

Finally, I found a broken glass effect tool on photofunia.com, where I gave the overall image a splinter look.

End of the story: You see for yourself ;-)) This is my attempt to do justice to the task and at the same time to shed a little light on my dark thoughts ;-))

Deutsche Version:

Entweder habe ich es in dieser Runde des Wettbewerbs besonders leicht – oder aber besonders schwer: das Ausgangsbild kenne ich schon lange. Man könnte sagen, es hat sofort zu mir gesprochen - es veranlaßte mich zu dem Text, den Ihr ebenfalls vorgestellt bekamt. Insofern habe ich natürlich auch zu den Worten einen besonderen Bezug…

Damals kam mir natürlich keine Bildbeschreibung in den Sinn, sondern ganz viele kleine Gedanken, die von dem Foto getriggert wurden. Diesen Wettbewerb werde ich also nutzen, um deutlich zu machen, was mir beim Verfassen des Textes durch den Kopf ging. Ich ahne bereits, daß es sehr viele Worte erfordern könnte ;-)) Ich beschränke mich daher auf genau ein finales Bild; ich erkläre, wie ich dahin komme und welche Tools ich ausprobiert habe, bis ich zufrieden war…

Zunächst sollt Ihr wissen, daß ich sehr leicht und darum sehr oft friere ;-)) Weil es dafür gar nicht unbedingt objektiv kalt sein muß, verwende ich gerne die Phrase von meiner „inneren Kälte“, mittels derer ich auszudrücken versuche, wie und warum ich mich dann so fühle…

@ty-ty‘s Bild zeigt uns nun eine eindeutig frostig kalte Situation. Ich sehe den Schnee, der die sonst vielleicht einladenden Bänke eher abweisend wirken läßt. Dahinter eine kahle Sandsteinwand, die im Sommer vielleicht ein warmes Gefühl vermittelt durch ihre erdige Tönung – im Winter jedoch ebenfalls kalt und nüchtern scheint. Die angedeutete Silhouette einer Stadt-Skyline, die der verwehte Schnee an den Steinen hinterlassen hat, bedeutet für mich zusätzlich etwas Kaltes, Unangenehmes: Ihr wißt schon aus früheren Posts, daß ich mich in städtischer Umgebung nicht wohl fühle und diese als unnatürlich und grotesk wahrnehme…

Da haben wir also schon zwei Ebenen von Kälte – die offensichtliche, die das Bild eingefangen hat, und die von mir verspürte.

Nun ist es so, daß ich selber auch meistens kalt und abweisend wirke. Wer mich nicht kennt, unterstellt mir darum gerne Arroganz oder Überheblichkeit, Unnahbarkeit oder Gefühllosigkeit. Nun, bis zu einem gewissen Punkt ist das sogar gewollt bzw. gar nicht zu leugnen. Mir ist ziemlich egal, was andere Leute von mir denken. Wenn mich jemand oder etwas nicht interessiert, werde ich das auch genau so sagen, statt zu heucheln oder Sympathie vorzugaukeln. Und ich kann mit Nähe nicht gut umgehen – Menschen, die mich bedrängen (und das kann durchaus respektvoll und mit für sie selbst angenehmem Abstand erfolgen), halte ich erfolgreich auf Distanz. Ich meine das gar nicht böse. Ich will einfach nur meine Ruhe haben…

Tatsächlich bin ich jedoch, bei aller äußeren und teilweise vorhandenen Härte / Kälte recht gefühlsbetont. Sozusagen der buchstäbliche weiche Kern innerhalb der harten Schale oder eben das lodernde Feuer unter der frostigen Fassade… Das einem Gegenüber begreiflich zu machen (wenn man noch dazu etwas aus der Übung ist), kann eine anspruchsvolle Aufgabe sein ;-))

Nicht zuletzt ist gefrorenes Wasser, Eis etwas Zerbrechliches, Durchscheinendes. Ihr kennt das: Vorsicht, dünnes Eis! Dennoch wohnt ihm eine enorme Kraft inne, die locker Glas und Steine sprengt.

Damit habe ich die dritte und vierte Ebene meiner Kälte-Assoziationen benannt: das Feuer unter dem Eis und die zerstörerische Kraft des vermeintlich spröden, fragilen Elements.

Das alles soll jetzt also in das Bild. Also – für mich ist es ja schon darin enthalten ;-)) Aber wie zeige ich es EUCH?

Bildbearbeitung habe ich bisher als minimalinvasiven Eingriff verstanden, mit dem bestimmte Verbesserungen oder Betonungen erzielt werden. Es darf auch durchaus ein spielerisches Element dabei sein. Das Leben ist ernst genug ;-)) Heute hieß es aber für mich, ein Foto krass zu verändern. In dieser Form mein erster Versuch. Entsprechend unsicher war ich bei der Verwendung der Mittel…

Bei den vergangenen Runden konnte ich spionieren, welche Tools die Teilnehmer so verwendet haben. GIMP kenne und nutze ich selber, fand es aber in diesem Fall für meine Zwecke nicht geeignet. Online fand ich eine Reihe kostenloser Angebote, die bei näherer Betrachtung mehr der Kreation lustiger Memes oder alberner comicartiger Trashbilder dienen. Gefallen fand ich an experte.de – bis ich feststellen mußte, daß man dort eindeutig Experte sein muß, um das Handling zu verstehen… Nix für mich ;-)) Bei fotor.de muß man sich registrieren, adobe.com ist nur in den ganz grundlegenden Funktionen kostenfrei. Hängen blieb ich also bei pixlr.com und fotojet.com. Mit einer Kombination aus beiden Angeboten fing ich an zu basteln… Um zu dem Schluß zu kommen, daß es für den letzten „broken glass effect“ noch ein drittes braucht, nämlich photofunia.com.

Hier habe ich auf GIMP an den Kontrasten, Schärfen und dem Farbton gearbeitet, um ein später unterlegtes Foto besser sichtbar zu machen.

Hier wählte ich einige Bildausschnitte und legte diese mittels fotojet.com über das bereits vorgefertigte Doppelpaket.

Abschließend fand ich ein Broken-Glass-Effect-Tool auf photofunia.com, wo ich dem Gesamtbild einen Splitterlook verpaßte.

Ende der Geschichte: Ihr seht es selbst ;-)) Das wäre also mein Versuch, der Aufgabenstellung gerecht zu werden und dabei gleichzeitig ein bißchen Licht in meine dunklen Gedankengänge zu bringen ;-))
