Healthy Mind: What is the "Sound" of Your Inner Voices?

The title may not be as silly as it possibly sounds!

I think most of us have the experience of having a small "inner voice" — or sometimes more than one — talking to us, particularly during challenging or difficult times.

Some people call that voice — which may, or may not, be imaginary — their "inner critic." Others might use more "New Agey" terminology like "guides," be regardless... I believe we have an idea of how these voices work.

The question is, however, whether those "voices" are kind and helpful and encouraging us to do the right thing... or are they a harsh critic, always chastising us?

You might think that you "don't have a CHOICE," but let's not forget that we are essentially talking about your own inner voice (and wisdom), meaning that you do have a choice.

If your inner voice is a harsh critic, ask yourself why, and where that tone comes from? Moreover, is it really being helpful, in your life? Or is it merely a fragment of a difficult childhood or a toxic relationship left over and still talking to you in a tone that made you feel small, rather than empowered?

And when things genuinely are difficult in your life... why would you actually want to compound the situation by engaging in negative self-talk?

Earlier today, I learned that I had missed a deadline (on February 1st) for a professional re-certification... with the result that I would have to re-take a bunch of coursework I am already familiar with, because those are the rules.

Of course, my "Inner Critic" immediately came out and started to berate me for being "stupid" and "forgetful" for not being perfectly on top of things? I soon enough told her to be quiet, and it was not long before I was able to stop "beating myself up." Whereas it will take a little time, it will be easy enough to do the studies, and it will be a good refresher. We all have busy lives, and the past three weeks have been particularly hectic. Mistakes and oversights happen.

So, next time you hear your inner voice get harsh and critical with you... pause for a moment and aske yourself whether that's really useful. Then consider taking a kinder tone with yourself!

Thanks for stopping by, and Bright Blessings to all!
