Mindful Living: Be Kind Whenever it is Possible!

We live in an often stressful and rushed world, even during these times when many of us are "stuck in place" due to lockdowns.

One of the things about being perpetually busy and preoccupied is that we tend to forget about many of life's small niceties because we have our heads down and eyes focused, as we think of nothing but the endless list of things we have to get done.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama once said:

Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.

For me, it is the words "it is ALWAYS possible" that are important to remember. We often make excuses about being "too busy" to be bothered with various things, but are we really? What will it really cost us to take a couple of extra moments to help someone, or to bring our neighbor's garbage bin in on a stormy day when it has started blowing down the street? What will it really cost us to say "yes" instead of "no" when someone asks us if we have a few minutes to give some advice?

Kindness takes many forms. Our cat just came and stood on my desk, blocking the keyboard and monitor, wanting attention. I can stop and scratch his ears for five minutes, or I can pick him up and put him on the floor. I scratch his ears and tell him he is a beautiful cat.

Using the cat as a metaphor for the world in general, a small kindness represents inclusion and a welcoming. After a few minutes, he wandered off, quite contented, and went to sleep on his blanket. This post will be delayed five minutes... was anything really lost?

The opposite choice represents an EXclusion and a rejection, if you think about it.

Of course, we often are on schedules and there are such things as having "healthy personal boundaries" to think about, but in the case of general kindness those only really apply when someone is "abusing their privilege."

One of the things I have learned is that being kind to someone can actually help us relax when we are feeling stressed out. That's one of the joys and fringe benefits of making someone else happy!

So, be kind whenever possible, and remember that it is always possible!

Thanks for visiting, and Bright Blessings!
