Binocular Vision Anomalies
There are lots of ocular conditions that affect us in diverse ways and of the common ones yet less likely to be diagnosed due to the low number of specialized care providers is binocular vision anomalies. When we talk about binocular vision anomalies we are basically referring to this particular group of conditions of the eye which only come to play when both of our eyes are working together.
This means that when you have only one eye working you do not qualify to develop a binocular vision anomaly because you would be uniocular. These anomalies have different signs and symptoms and thus present in different ways however it is worth mentioning that they do have overlapping signs and symptoms too.
These include;
Accomodation Insufficiency
Accommodation Excess
Convergence Insufficiency
Convergence Excess
Accomodative Dysfunction
Since these are all individual conditions with their own intricacies we would be taking them one after the other to enable you understand them better. And so for today we would be looking at accommodative insuffienciency.
Accommodative Insufficiency
In this condition our eyes ability to alter its power to see better at near and at far is not sufficient such that when one tries to do near work for a while which involves sustained levels of accomodation things start to go haywire. Mostly patient would complain that when they read for a while they cannot focus anymore.
This either get blurry and wouldn't clear up or may even experience diplopia or double vision, should they try to still read things get messy and they end up with asthenopia including headaches, ocular pain and a whole lot of discomfort. This condition can make studying very difficult for students which could have detrimental effects on academic performance if not looked at.
Management/ Conclusion
Treatment may involve the use of lenses to help the patient be able to do near work or through therapy to try and build up the accommodative power naturally until that point where the person can just do near work without having to go through all that stress and discomfort.
If you think you may be suffering from this condition it is of utmost importance that you visit your Optometrist for proper care lest it disturbs you and has a detrimental effect on other aspects of your life. Your questions are warmly welcomed, we thank you for your time and for reading, we wish you the best and we hope you continue to be with us for the discussion of the others. Be safe.
